To be honest, it hadn't been Ward's biggest priority once he'd gotten out of jail to hightail it over to Josie's place. It was on his list, sure. But he wasn't really all that concerned about her or his son. He knew that he, Dale, was being well cared for. He also knew that Josie had remarried. And yes, he knew that neither of them would welcome him in with open arms. For one, Josie was probably scared shitless of him. He couldn't help but assume that his sort-of confession to her had eased her mind any. But it had eased his, and it helped him get out earlier. All part of the healing process, and what not. For another, he knew Dale didn't even know he existed.
His first priority had been getting settled. He'd moved in with his brother at Sid's insistence. He'd gotten a job, also at Sid's insistence. And he'd stayed out of trouble and off the radar, yes, at Sid's insistence. But now was the time, several months later, to see his child. And whatever Josie was.
He'd waited until Sid went to work, because he knew he wouldn't approve. An unsupervised visit was probably not very kosher, but he didn't want to risk getting choked up or appear vulnerable in front of anyone. It was easy for Ward to hide in plain sight until Josie got home from work, so he did just that. Right outside on her front porch, he did that, sitting there until he saw them go in. Dale looked just like him. It was uncanny. There was no doubt in his mind that he was the father.
Ward swallowed, waited until they went inside, and then turned visible. After a moment, gaining some composure, he knocked on the door. He smiled when she opened it. He knew she wasn't expecting him. It was funny. "Hi Josie." His voice was light and friendly. He was a man transformed and revived, after all.
