Who: Jaden and Annie
What: Strange first meeting
When: New Year's Eve night
Where: Near a house party
Rating: TBD

Jade had resolved himself to just spend New Year's Eve in his room wishing he could go out and do something, so when his parents came to his room and told him he could go out if he wanted to, he almost couldn't believe it. He got dressed in somewhat dark clothes, so as to blend in with the shadows when he ran to the party. He had heard about the party probably in a similar way so many people heard about his party. He said bye to his parents and was out the door in a matter of minutes. He was still a bit on the nervous side about social stuff; in fact, he checked himself in the mirror a number of times before finally deciding that unless he actually wanted to change something, he looked the same each time. Annie had said that Eden probably thought he looked cute, but who knew whether or not she was just being nice. She seemed like a nice person, and nice people typically did try to make people feel good. He hoped she was right. Eden would likely be at this party. She seemed to be at pretty much all of the parties, so why wouldn't she be at this one?

After he got outside he began jogging for a little bit till he was mostly in the shadows. Once in the shadows, he took off. As usual, the shadows provided a decent cover for him, for by the time someone looked to see if they actually saw someone running by at 200 mph he would already be gone. It worked for nearly the entire way there. Once the house was in view, he began looking for a place to duck behind so he wouldn't be seen using his power. There was a sudden burst of light coupled with an explosive sound. Jaden couldn't help but turn his attention to the firework that had just burst. When he looked back ahead, he saw someone just in front of him. He tried to move to the side quickly to avoid her but tripped on the curb when he did so. He passed the girl at nearly 100mph before crashing to the ground hard.

This was definitely not a good thing. There was no way this girl didn't see him. How was he going to get out of this one? He had just gotten ungrounded.

Annie was freezing her ass off. She had a sparkly dress she had been wanting to wear for ages, and when New Year's came around, it was practically dress code to wear one. Of course, the weather didn't exactly agree with her choices, so she was wrapped up in a warm pea coat and hauling some serious butt to make it to the door as fast as was possible in heels, when she saw it happen.

At first, she thought she had hallucinated; what could possibly be moving that fast? But there was a distinct noise to her left, and Annie knew she hadn't been imagining that. She wasn't entirely sure what she was expecting as she took a few hesitant steps in the darkness, but it wasn't Jaden.

Aanika stared at the boy with furrowed brows for a moment, still freezing, but momentarily distracted from it by the fact that a human being had just flown past her at lightning speed. How? She supposed she had heard stories of things like this before- people with powers- but seeing it in action was completely different. After a solid moment of gawking, she finally managed to ask, "Er... Are you okay?"

Jaden lay quiet for a moment. He looked at the girl he almost ran over recognizing her as Annie. She hadn't freaked out yet. That was a good sign. Maybe she had seen this type of thing before, he thought. Maybe she was like Eden, and she actually liked the idea of powers. He sat up and gave his ankle a quick look before trying to stand. "Yeah," he answered, "If there is any chance you didn't see what happened, I'd be even better." Not that he was embarrassed. Well... that was part of it. He was in high school and Annie was looking especially cute tonight, so it would definitely be a bonus if she didn't see anything.

He got to his feet slowly, testing the ankle on the foot that hit the curb just in case. Everything seemed fine, save for a few scratches and a fair amount of dirt covering his once clean clothes. He then looked at the girl before him. He rubbed the back of his head sheepishly and gave the ground his best embarrassed smile. "Hi," he said. He tried to think of anything to say, but nothing good came to mind. "Um... You look nice tonight."

Annie quirked a brow at him. It would be nice if she hadn't seen anything? She wondered if that referred to me wipe out or to the unearthly speed at which he had been traveling. "What you mean the whole you moving impossibly fast thing?" She asked, opting for the less embarrassing option. "You go to school with Mao, don't you? Is that your er... Thing? Power? Ability?"

She could feel her cheeks warm slightly at his compliment and offered him a smile of her own. "Thanks. You do, too, minus the er...." She shifted forward to brush some of the dirt off of his shirt. "Are you okay?"

He scratched the back of his head as she confirmed his fear that she had indeed seen him running at an inhuman speed. "Yeah," he replied, "That." He sighed. He had become careless. If his parents found out he would likely be grounded again, but maybe she would keep it quiet, like Eden did. Or at least keep it more on the downlow than Mao did. "Yeah," he replied again, "That would be my thing."

His sheepish smile remained on his face as he looked up a bit to meet her eyes. He then tried to brush off some of the dirt as best he could. "Thanks," he told her, even though he knew, this time for sure, she was just being nice. "Nothing seems to be broken this time," he told her, "I kind of got distracted by the fireworks."

He looked around, again feeling embarrassed by the situation. "Sorry," he finally said, "I didn't mean to almost hit you."

She wasn't entirely sure what to make of his reaction. Was he embarrassed that he could run twenty times as fast as a world record holder? Annie had a hard time grasping what was so humiliating about that. Sure, she knew there were some people who were anti-mutant, which she didn't entirely understand herself, but she was clearly not one of them with her obvious lack of disgust. She tried to lighten the mood up for him a little. "That's cool. At least yours is something neat. Some people can just like... make milk come out of their nose on command."

She watched him dust off and chuckled softly. "This time? Does it happen to you a lot? Distracted by the shiny stuff? And you don't have to apologize for not hitting me. Last time I checked, that was a good thing."

Jaden did feel a bit better upon realizing that she seemed cool with someone that had powers. He gave a real smile at her comment, and even laughed a little at the thought of a person with super milk out of the nose. "Thanks," he told her. "I'd much rather have super speed than super milk out of my nose."

He laughed sheepishly. "Not as much anymore," he told her, "Mostly when I was younger." He felt a bit stupid by the whole situation, but the questions made him feel even worse. Mostly because it was true. He thought he had gotten it mostly under control, at least while he was running, but obviously he still had a bit of work to do. "Yeah," he said as she put the new spin on the situation. "I'm glad you're alright."

He noticed the way Annie was holding the coat around herself. "Do you need to get inside?" he asked.

"Yeah, it's probably a bit more useful, don't you think?" she offered, tossing him a wink.

Aanika hadn't expected him to actually admit to being ADD or whatever the politically correct term for it was these days, and she had a moment of severe foot in mouth syndrome, before she welcomed the distraction of returning inside.

"Oh God, yeah. It's freezing out here!" Seriously. She was so cold that her goosebumps had goosebumps. "But before we go in-" She stepped forward and adjusted his mussed hair, and straightened his shirt a little. "Just in case lady love is inside, yeah?"

Jaden grew a little red as she straightened up his shirt and hair, talking about lady love. He still wasn't convinced that Eden had any sort of attraction to him. He hoped, but he doubted it. Still, it was nice of Annie to encourage him. "Thanks," he told her after she finished.

"You won't tell anyone about me," he asked, "Will you?" She was very nice, so he had the feeling she would respect his wishes. His main reason for wanting to make sure she didn't talk about it was because he would probably get in trouble with his parents. They were definitely better than they were a year ago, so he didn't want something causing them to decide they were right originally. The only person to discover his power, and didn't go to his school, before now was Eden, and she liked it. Now Annie seemed pretty cool with it too. In his mind, his parents were definitely wrong, but he also knew that telling your parents they're wrong is not as easy as it sounds.

Annie eyed him for a moment, before turning around to head back toward the very appealing-looking warmth of the party she had almost made it to. "It's not my secret to tell," she answered with a small shrug of her shoulders. "Come on. You can walk me in. Always better to show up with someone else than alone."

He gave her an appreciative smile as he joined her to walk with her into the party. "Thanks, Annie," he told her, which seems to be slowly becoming his catch phrase tonight. "By the way," he offered a slightly sly smile, "Glad to know you aren't some middle aged alcoholic."

For a moment, Aanika had no idea what he was talking about, and she gave him an odd look, before realization dawned and she burst into laughter. "I look young for my age," she tossed back as she pushed open the door.
