Who: Tino and Mia (and Benito and Gino) What: Trick-or-treat When: Halloween Where: Their Tino's place Rating: TBD Prompt: 4 - "What's the catch?"
This was weird. Although her mother had come over to take a thousand pictures as was customary on all holidays, it was still completely bizarre not to have Tino by her side. This was something they did together, that they always had fun with. They may have had their ups and downs over the years, but Halloween had never been a bad thing. The boys were excited for candy, and Mia was thrilled to see them in their costumes. She still half expected him to magically appear next to her with one of his under the breath comments that earned a playful smack and a mutter to 'shut up'.
And then there was the whole not having the other half of her costume around. It felt... strange, making a costume for herself without making him a matching half. She wondered if he'd even gotten a costume. Maybe he'd recycled one from last year. Maybe he'd gone out and bought his own.
The boys had donned Mario and Luigi outfits for the evening, leaving her to go as Princess Peach: pink dress, blonde wig, tiara. She'd had it planned for a while, wanting Tino to go out as Wario (with a giant mustache and all). But she shook off the thought as she waited for her boys to grab the latest handful of candy to stuff into their pumpkins.
"What do you say?" she reminded them, earning a synchronized chiming of Thank you!, before they continued on down the street.
"Are we gonna see Daddy soon?" Gino piped up as they were walking.
"Yeah!" Benny exclaimed. "Is he gonna come with?"
Mia forced a smile for them. "We're almost there," she answered gently. "And if Dad wants to come out, he can, of course." Even though it would probably be horribly awkward. Even though it was sure to be painful for her. Her boys were more important.
"It's our house!" Gino exclaimed, and Mia laughed softly as the twins yanked out of her grip and bolted for the front door, knocking on it loudly. "TRICK OR TREAT, DAD!"
