Who: Sumi and anyone
What: Taking a job hunting break
When: Tuesday, around Noon
Where: A small cafe

Sumi had a free day, and as annoying as it was to spend the day looking for a job, that's what she was doing. She only had a little spending money a month, and that was only compliments of her parents. If she was going to truly experience New York City during her time here, she was going to need a bit more spending money. She had a few auditions, but there was no guarantee she would be chosen, as she had no professional experience or schooling in acting. If only becoming an actress were as easy as it sounds. Go to New York, plays and musicals are everywhere, so obviously you'll get a part. The only problem was that no, it wasn't that easy. This is the reason she was out applying for jobs now. She had already applied at a few diners, so hopefully she would have something soon.

She walked into this cafe, not really looking for lunch more for a pick me up. Something sweet to help get her through the rest of the outing. She walked in, got a cup of coffee, a veggie wrap, and an application. She then sat down and began working on the application. She smiled a few of the other customers pleasantly. Despite her non existant income, she still felt happy to be in New York. She knew her parents wouldn't let her starve or anything, and she didn't have to worry about school costs. She was probably one of the luckier girls her age that she knew. Even if something came from her auditions, when she gets accepted into the Veterinary program in a few years, she would have to leave the spotlight. She was just hoping to make the most out of her stay in New York, for it was a place that her grandfather always told her great stories about. Perhaps that was one of her main reasons to go to college here. It's not like there aren't other schools that have Veterinary medicine programs, afterall. She looked out of the window as she took a small bite of her wrap. Her eyes glossed over a little as they watered while she held back a tear. She didn't need to cry, for her grandfather would be proud, right?

Tuesdays Ariel had a break between classes, a three hour block that he liked to use wisely. He had his Gay & Lesbian Performance course from eight 'til eleven, and then his Song Performance Workshop course at two. In the meantime, he'd wrapped his favorite Brooks Brothers scarf around his neck (it matched the nautical theme of the rest of his outfit: navy, white, and red - crisp white short-sleeved Oxford matched with a red bowtie striped with blue, and a gray cardigan, striped in the same navy, accompanied by a pair of dark grey, fitted trousers and high-shined saddle shoes) and slid into his dark navy peacoat, and headed to one of his favorite coffee shops. It was a small place, little bigger than a hole in the wall, but with large sheet glass windows and brilliant coffee.

The brass bell that hung above the door tinkled as he stepped inside, cheeks flushed a bright pink from the wind. Ariel hitched his messenger bag up on his shoulder and approached the counter. He knew the baristas, and so, greeted them accordingly, a bright smile on his face. Then, once he had his cup of coffee, he peered around the room, trying to find an empty table to do a bit of work on.

Then he saw her. The name popped into his head instantly - Sumi. Still smiling, Ariel walked up to the girl as she stared out the window, his coffee mug cupped between two hands to warm them.

"Enjoying the view?"

Sumi looked over when someone began speaking to her. A smile came to her face as she noticed who the speaker was. She nodded gently in reply to his question, "Very much," she told him. She then pushed a chair from the table with her foot and moved the application to the side. "You want to join me?" she asked the well dressed Ariel.

Everytime she met him, he had such a cute, but very much his own, style of dress. It worked for him. "It's nice to just sit and enjoy the view from time to time," she commented, "Everyone else seems to always be in a rush that they tend to miss the beauty of what's around them." Her thoughts were apparently starting to effect her words, for that was something that her grandfather would have said.

Sumi dabbed her mouth, making sure to happen to hit her eyes as well, with her napkin. "So what are you up to today, Handsome?" she asked, hoping that he was trying to find people for a play or musical, but either way, she was happy to get some company.

Sipping the piping coffee gingerly, Ariel smiled around the rim of his mug as he listened to Sumi, who nodded at him and (gently) kicked a chair out for him. He sat, placing the cup of coffee on the table between them, and saying a small thank you. The wetness of Sumi's eyes didn't go unnoticed by the boy, but he said nothing, but continued to smile pleasantly. He wondered if he had interrupted her, but decided he wouldn't ask what the matter was, unless she chose to pursue the topic. Ariel wasn't in the habit of pressing others when they didn't want to be pressed.

He cocked his head to the side and looked out the window the girl had been gazing out herself. The street outside was full of people with their chins tucked to their chests against the wind, eyes unseeing. He turned his attention back to Sumi and took another sip of his coffee, watching as she brushed under her eyes with her napkin, but smiling all the same when she flashed a grin at him.

"Nothing exciting today, I fear. Just class, class, class, and then practice, practice, practice," he said finally with a sad shake to his head. Ariel's eyes dropped to the application Sumi had pushed aside when he'd sat. "What about you? Is that an application for here?"

Sumi nodded at his question, "Free day from classes means I need to find a job for some spending money." She took a small bite from her sandwich, "I'll still make time for the theater of course, but still need clothes to look cute in." She grinned sweetly at Ariel. "Plus, if I get a job here, free coffee," she said in the same manner as someone trying to close a deal. She then sipped her coffee and enjoyed the warm sensation that ran through her body.

"Practicing anything interesting?" Sumi asked. She always liked to keep in the know about musicals and such at NYU, for those were the only acting style jobs she could ever hope to get. She may have had a love for theater, but since she wasn't planning on pursuing that path as her ultimate career, not a lot of people were up for giving her a chance. She often wondered what it would be like to follow the path of acting instead, but then she would see a stranded dog or cat or something else and she went right back to wanting to help animals.

Ariel smiled as he wrapped his hands around his mug to warm them and listened to the girl across from him. They'd met at an afterparty for... was it High Society? He couldn't remember now. Still, even though she wasn't someone he saw often, it was always nice to run into familiar faces in the City - there were so many strangers, after all, and for a boy like Ariel, who had gone to the same school with the same handful of kids for so many years, it could get overwhelming very quickly.

He grinned down at his cup of coffee at the mention of the perks of working at a cafe and took a sip.

"Those are things we all need. Theater, clothes, and free coffee," he said with a dreamy sort of look on his face and a happy sigh before laughing. He lifted his cup in a mock 'cheers to that!' and took another drink before answering Sumi's question. "There's always something interesting going on. I feel like I'm being pulled in a million and one directions. Not only do I have the performances for class, but I'm trying to form a sort of glee club/choir/band, working on the student-run basement arts musical for December, and on and on. - Are you?"

Sumi shook her head at the returned question, "Being a freshman, it's kind of difficult to get ahead in my theater class." She was actually getting rather frustrated with it, but she was still trying her best. "So far, they just stick me in the background," she told him with a scrunch of her nose to show her disdain. "But I'll find a way to get up there," she told him determination in her eyes. She took a piece of lettuce out of her wrap and nibbled on it.

"Of course, I guess this does mean I have more time to see the city, and maybe get to go see you and your glee club," she commented, "Of course, I could be tempted to join your glee club if being from another college doesn't exclude me." She had fun at the classes she was in, but in class the freshmen sort of got pushed to the back. Lowest on the totem pole type of thing.

"I could be tempted to let you join if you audition," said Ariel with a smile, mimicking Sumi's choice of words. Since the club was mostly his and a friend's making, there really were no bounds to who could or couldn't join. He understood the girl's frustration at being forced into the background. He'd been there and it hadn't been fun. Not often, really, because he was naturally ...let's say, noticeable, but he had been there and he felt nothing but sympathy. "If you want to come by this Thursday - I can text you the address - I'd be more than happy to go through things with you. Though, I should warn you, there is little glamor in singing at Bat Mitzvahs."

Sumi smiled her cutest smile, "I doubt it's all that bad," she assured. "Also, it's more about the experience isn't it?" she asked, "I enjoy singing, I find you very fun to talk to, and I'm sure your friends would also be just as fun." She was mainly looking for the experiences that could only be found when you are around a group of people who are there just to have fun. The appearance of a place is not as important as the experiences you have there. "I'll definitely come by," she told him, "I look forward to it?" She made a mental note to try to push everything she could aside on Thursday. Not that she had much more than school work to do. She needed to get out and have some more experiences. She just felt sad that she seemed to have more experiences in her dreams than she did in real life.

The boy shook his head after taking a drink of his still-hot coffee, unable not to return the adorable smile Sumi had given him.

"It's not bad," said Ariel, raising his eyebrows for emphasis. He and his friends did have fun singing and dancing, and just spending time together choreographing and messing around, but, well, there was a certain way such work was portrayed - and a certain way it actually was, and there was quite a gulf between actuality and presentation. After all, it wasn't as if learning several songs' worth of lyrics and dance moves was something one accomplished in a couple hours. "I'm just saying it's not glamorous. But if you're okay with that, then that's brilliant. I'll tell everyone you're coming by."

"Then it's settled," she told him, "I can't wait." She smiled at him before finishing the last bite of her wrap. She began contemplating what kind of song she could do for the audition. She was relatively versatile, so long as country wasn't in the mix. She was a half Chinese girl who was raised by her Chinese grandfather (a man who was originally from China), raised in the North-Eastern part of the country. At no point had she even come across a Southern accent aside from movies and tv, so she just was not particularly good with the southern accent. It was something she was willing to work on of course, but for now she just hoped it wouldn't come up.

"What kind of song should I prepare?"
