Who: Dale and Josie
What: Birthday Breakfast
When: Saturday, September 8; morning
Where: Breakfast
Rating: Low

For as long as Dale could remember, he was never excited for his birthday. To him, they were just another day in the year. When he woke up, he felt the same as he did the night before. The passage of time showed in different ways, how somehow over the course of the summer he was now taller than his mother. There was plenty of growing up to suffer through as he found himself tripping over his rapidly growing limbs and being constantly put out the sporadic loss of control over his voice, with high pitched squeaks and extreme lows interrupting his speech...if his voice let him get the whole word out at all. Yet, he couldn't figure out why he had to feel special about being another year older. He did, however, enjoy the fact that the occasion to do whatever he wanted. The gifts he could do without, but asking for time alone with his mom was too good to pass up.

He had felt a distance growing between them, though he blamed it largely in part on the never-ending caseloads from her government job, Adrian and the twins. When he was younger and it was just them and the world, but now that he was older he had to learn to fend for himself. Granted, his mom still tried to smother him to the point he couldn't stand to be around her, but that didn't stop him from still wanting her undivided attention sometimes. For a few hours at least, he wouldn't have to share her company with anyone else.

They walked into the cafe with their arms linked, their 'causal stroll' seeming more like a pair in a rush to arrive where they needed to go. Dale held the door open for his mother, his smile brightening as he noted that the corner diner hadn't changed much since their last visit. Before they had a new home and family to go to, the place had strangely been a second home. A finicky eater in the worst way, the small restaurant was one of the few places where Josie could take Dale where the food managed to be consistently good.

"Booth or counter?" he asked his mom as he walked inside, not bothering to glance at the menu that hung above the counter, he tended to order the same dish depending on what time of day it was. Though, with his growing appetite, he planned on ordering extras of everything.

As the two of them walked towards the diner Josie shot a few proud smiles after her little...well...not so little boy anymore. She noted that he had overshot her in height this past summer, something she was a little stunned by since she wasn't really that short of a girl. She stood at a good 5'7" and he was a good few inches taller than her. At his age she knew that he wasn't going to stop growing for a few more years, she worried about the day he outgrew Adrian.

Josie smiled again at Dale's jovial expression, today was one of his good days. Good days for him were far and few between as he got older. She loved these days, it was these days that she saw her son, her baby, her little miracle. The boy who brought her back to life. On these days he was so like Jacen, well...like Jacen before they had that huge fight. That stupid fight that part of thinks he still hates her over that. But that wasn't the point, she was happy that she saw her brother in him. She saw both brothers in him. JJ had been such a constant in his life he couldn't help but influence the boy growing up. Sure, she knew Dale probably didn't think she knew about his behavior at school, but she knew all about the pranks. While she knew she should be upset with him, the stories about all the trouble he got in made her smile. That was so JJ and herself she guessed. Yeah, he was a little like her too. However, she hoped that he didn't inherit her mindset on relationships that she had at his age. She shot another look over at him...he wouldn't, she could tell, he was too much of a good kid to do that.

She giggled as he opened the door for her, mama trained her boy well. Josie glanced around the place was identical, she even recognized some of the faces of employees. She locked eyes with one of the cooks and gave a little wave. His eyes seemed to light up and he smiled back.

"Booth," Josie responded to her sons question and made her way over to 'their booth' as they had dubbed it all those years ago. She sat down on her usual side of the booth. Even back then Dale insisted on sitting across from her, wanting to be a big boy. He always wanted to grow up quickly and looking at him now she realized how fast her really was growing. In four short years he'd be out of the house off at one college or another. She knew how fast those years would go and she made a promise to herself that she'd cherish every moment she had with him. That she'd watch over him like always to make sure that he never ever reminded her of his father.

"Who do we have here?" The waitress drawled as she set a menu down on Josie's side of the booth, then motioned for Dale to get up before he settled completely into his seat. "He's growing like a weed; stand up so that I can get a good look at you!"

He gave his mom a sly look before complying to the request, holding out his arms a little to give a slow turn around for the lady. "I haven't changed that much, Dee."

"Not buying, kiddo, you're probably getting old enough to help around here." Dee smirked, pulling a pencil from behind her ear and extracted her pad from her apron. Already writing down Dale's order, she glanced over at him just to confirm, "Your usual or are you feeling brave today?"

"The usual, double if mom says okay," Dale replied as he slid back into his seat across from Josie. He picked up his rolled silverware and clicked his tongue. "This is rolled too tight, do you have somebody new in back?" The waitress passed Dale some napkins from her apron before he asked, nodding. "You could probably show him a thing or two."

While Dale set about resetting the silverware in their booth, the waitress chuckled and turned her attention to Josie. "It's been ages since you've been in. Big occasion?"

Josie smiled when she saw Dee making her way over. She had always been their favorite server, actually planned when they'd go so they could get her. She gave a little laugh when she said he was growing like a week and he stood up at did a little turn,

"He is isn't he, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being the tallest in the family," she made sure not to mention Adrian in particular, this was Dale's day, a happy day. While she wished that he and Adrian would bond it didn't look like it was going to happen anytime in the near future unless something major happened. And frankly she didn't want to even think of what kind of major thing would have to happen to make the two of them bond.

Josie smiled and shook her head at Dee's comment about Dale working at the diner. While him getting a job sounded like a good idea she knew he was too busy with extracurriculars to work at the same time. While he technically could do it all she knew his schoolwork would suffer also that much stress wasn't good for a kid.

When Dale said he'd have double if she said it was okay she smirked, "You're the birthday boy of course it's okay," she handed her menu to Dee, "I'll have the same, double mine up too." Josie was lucky that with age her metabolism seemed to not slow down, she knew it was partially because of her power which she now rarely used. She knew getting to DC wouldn't take as long if she used her power but why bother getting all sweaty and wearing herself out when there was a perfectly good train that took her there when they needed her.

Josie simply beamed as she watched Dale reset the silverware in their booth Dee caught her attention when she asked if it was a big occasion, "Well my baby just started his first year of high school, and he had a little thing called his fourteenth birthday this past Wednesday. Color me surprised when he told me he wanted to go out to breakfast with just his mommy, I was under the impression that hanging out with your mother was still considered uncool." She shot Dale a playful smile. She honestly was over the moon that he wanted to spend time with just her this morning. They never got to spend that much time together and there were things she wanted to know,

"So...is there any special girl that's caught your eye that I should know about?"
