Who: Tino and Mia
What: a talk
When: today, shortly after this, and shortly before this
Where: their house
Rated: TBD

Tino frowned. Here he was, sitting around his house, waiting to deliver more bad news. It seemed like he had just been in this position. It hadn't been pleasant. In fact, it had all but backfired and blown up in his face. He wasn't going to make the same mistake twice, that was for sure. For starters, he didn't cook dinner. And the boys were around somewhere, playing or something. There would be no yelling. It was important that there was no yelling about this. Gino and Benito didn't need to know.

He paced around the kitchen. Traffic. It was the bane of his existence, even when he wasn't sitting in it. It was taking Mia forever, it seemed. Ugh. Really. The only thing he hated more than traffic was Alex Bailey, and he had good reason. What a complete and utter dick. To make Tino break news like this? It wasn't fair. And the boys had done nothing wrong. Honestly, he felt bad for Olivia. She was a sweet girl, swept into a controlling and psychopathic marriage.

He hated the idea of this. He needed a drink. With a quick couple of steps, Tino was standing in front of the fridge, pulling it open and reaching in for a beer. He popped the top off -- which rolled onto the floor and under a cabinet -- and took a large swig. In two more gulps, the drink was gone. He placed it on the counter and grabbed another. He was just about to take another large gulp when he heard Mia's keys in the door.

Mia looked him over for a minute, thankful enough that he hadn't objected that she could ignore his comments for the time being. Had they really been happy a couple of weeks ago? It felt so far away.

"Just... help me get them ready, please," she murmured, moving for the boy's room.

Tino rolled his eyes, but had no choice but to oblige. He sighed loudly, and followed her toward Gino and Ben's room. On his way, he slipped his phone out. He had a text from Janey. He raised his eyebrows. Sure, she was his sister-in-law, but she wasn't exactly on his frequent text list. Curious, he hit 'Open'.

He stopped dead in his tracks and stared at the words. Toni was in the hospital. He was, apparently, hurt. Quickly, he sent back a short text and waited for the answer. In the meantime, he joined Mia.

"What do you want to pack them?" He was distracted now, waiting for another buzz, but he wasn't going to give Mia the satisfaction of seeing him nervous.

Mia eyed him as she heard his footsteps pause, and at first shrugged off his reaction when she saw him texting. Typical man. Texting in the middle of a fight like nothing was happening.

But when he came up next to her again, something was off. She'd known him too long not to notice. Still, she didn't want to give him the satisfaction of knowing she was curious.

"Clothes for a few days," she answered after a brief pause, watching him with interest.

She was speaking at him, but he wasn't really listening to what she was saying. Toni was hurt. In the hospital. Janey's text was replaying over and over in his head. It could be anything, and Tino hated not knowing.

"They need clothes, right?" He opened the closet door and pulled two small suitcases from the top shelf. One had a Toy Story pixar design. The other one was Nemo. The boys loved them. They'd be happy to know they were traveling with their own luggage.

His phone vibrated in his pocket again, but he waited to check, even though it was killing him. He couldn't look too eager. Mia would definitely know something was wrong.

She gave him an odd look. "Well, I wasn't asking you to pack mine." Still, he'd at least gotten the suitcases down, the sight of them enough to make her lips quirk up slightly, before she remembered the situation at hand.

"Aren't you going to get that?" she asked of his buzzing phone.

Tino quirked his brow at her. He wasn't planning on packing hers anyways. If she wanted to leave for a few days, she could pack her own damn clothes. Her comment annoyed him so much that she almost forgot that his brother was hurt.

Her question brought it crashing back down on him. "Oh.. yeah. One second." He pulled his phone out. Sure enough, the text was from Janey. Her spelling was horrendous, but the message was clear. Toni was stabbed. In the chest.

Tino could feel the color drain from his face. He could hear nothing but a loud ringing. His worst fear was about to come true. He'd already lost his best friend. Now he was going to lose his brother.

Mia lips parted for the inevitable Well?

But before she could get there, she saw a look on his face that her backpedaling. She hadn't seen a look like that out of him in a long, long time, and she felt a small burst of panic at seeing it again.

"...What is it?" she asked, tone softening considerably. "What's wrong?"

Almost immediately, Tino replied. "Nothing," he said. He didn't want to worry her. He didn't want his trauma to change her mind about leaving. If she was going, he wanted her to go. He didn't want her to feel bad for him.

"Let's just get the boys packed so you can go to your sisters. Or mothers. Wherever you're going."

Mia's concern was struggling against her frustration with him, but it managed to win out for another probing attempt.

"Tino. Stop," she demanded, reaching for his arm. "What's going on?"

Out of habit, he almost let her arm stay there. But after a second of fighting with himself, he pulled away.

"I have to go to the hospital for something. Don't worry about it. I'll still help you pack, okay?"

Okay. And the frustration won over.

"Valentino Ermes Spinelli, you have exactly ten seconds to tell me what is happening, or I am going to kick your scrawny ass into next week. Something is obviously wrong. Now quit being an idiot, and tell me."

Tino blinked. "Toni was stabbed. In the chest. Happy?" He pulled out his phone, asked Janey what hospital he was in, and then pocketed it again. "Let's just get the fucking boys' clothes packed so I can go, okay?"
