Mary-Beth smiled awkwardly and nodded when the other mother questioned the sex of her child. She knew that it was probably pretty awkward and shocking to someone else that a girl could be capable of something like that, but these were the children of J.J. and Mary-Beth after all. Nikki and Emerson were doomed from the start to be half spit-fire, half rebel at the very least.
She frowned a little when she heard the other mother scolding her child so openly in public. Sure, Mary-Beth was going to reprimand Nikki, or at least have J.J. do it when they got home, but she wouldn't do it in front of another child or parent. Things like that were meant for behind closed doors.
Mary-Beth quickly smiled though and chuckled slightly at the other mother. "Oh no, we're fine. A bump on her head might do her some good but I think Lucas over there was more or less playing basketball with our shopping cart." Mary-Beth held up the cucumbers that littered the basket and looked at the place where the cart used to be situated that had a few cucumbers on the ground. She shrugged at the mess, "They're just kids."
She grinned when Nora started to laugh. Mary-Beth didn't find it quite as funny but she wasn't mad about it either. "What do you think of that, Em? A cucumber and banana ... soup?" Emerson scrunched up his nose and stuck out his tongue at the suggestion of a soup with that combination, making Mary-Beth laugh at him.
