Emily was lying on her bed curled up into a little ball, she hadn't left her room or spoken to anyone for days. Her father had already made empty threats, but Bethany apparently seemed to know exactly what was wrong. Emily was sure that no one questioned why she hadn't gone to school the past week, they probably assumed that she had gotten hurt like several others in the storm. They probably didn't suspect that the only wound she received was a broken heart. Truly, everyone had gotten at least a scratch or bruise from the storm, but not Emily. She didn't have a scratch on her. There had been some violent smaller storms after the hurricane on Saturday, but they caused little to no damage.
She stared at the little rivers that the rain was making on her window as she lied on her side. She had finally changed out of the tattered party dress into a large sweater that used to belong to Evan and some plain pajama bottoms. Life wasn't fair, what made this Casey so much better than her? Why did Max want Casey instead of her? She was cute, wasn't she? What was wrong with her, what could she do to make Max want her instead of Casey? Casey with her bubbly personality and bright blond hair. Emily frowned. What was it with blonds. What made them so appealing anyway, honestly? Max liked Casey with her bright blond hair, Evan liked that blond next door, Calvin liked Katie and her reddish blond hair, Alex liked Josie with her blond hair, and all the girls liked Evan who had blond hair. She had not inherited her father's blond hair like Evan had, instead she had gotten her mother's dark brown locks. When she was younger she had lighter hair and during the summer it always considerably lightened, but it was never blond like Evan's. She sat up as she tugged at a section of her hair. She glanced at it and an idea hit her. 'Of course, that would solve everything.' A small smile spread on her face, the first one in a long while.
Bethany had been bugging her forever to let her change Emily's hair, now she'd give her that chance, but it was Emily's choice. She wasn't going to chop it off like Bethany suggested, no, she was going to go blond and not strawberry blond or dirty blond, no, bright blond, maybe a golden blond, yeah, that would be pretty. When Emily told Bethany her plans Bethany was ecstatic and immediately drove Emily to the very place where she got her hair colored. Emily told the colorist what she wanted and soon the colorist began to bleach Emily's long dark hair.
Emily hummed a tune to herself as she read one of the magazines, not really paying much attention, goodness her scalp was burning, that stuff stung. Soon enough they washed the bleach out and put in the color, a pretty medium blond. After a few more hours of color and washing and drying it was time for the grand reveal. Bethany and the colorist were beaming as the pulled the towel off of Emily's hair letting it fall down. Emily grinned at the two and noticed that both their eyes widened and their smile faltered before they forced a grin. "What?" Emily said her grin gone, "what's wrong." Bethany assured her it was nothing, that it was lovely. She was lying it was obvious, Emily's breathing started getting erratic what was wrong, why was Bethany and the colorist looking at her so horrified. "Tell me what's wrong!" The two glanced at each other before turning Emily around to see her reflection.
Emily gasped in horror. Her hair, her hair was bright blond, not a medium blond, bright blond, a few shades below platinum, but much brighter than the medium blond Emily had been expecting. Her hair was frizzy from the damage the bleach caused. She touched the blond locks as she let out a little cry, "My hair, my hair!" Bethany tried to soothe her as the colorist said not to worry that she'd try to tame the hair with some heavy conditioner, but there was little she could do about the color without running the risk of damaging the hair more.
The conditioner worked and her hair had definitely calmed down however it was still blond. Emily stared at her reflection in her room. Well she got her wish, she was a blond. She gave a little smile at that thought, 'now everything will be so much easier, I will finally get what I want.' She could hardly wait until school on Monday to start her new life as a blond.
