If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
It could be said that Jen was perhaps a mathematical genius. Still, there were some questions that even she couldn't figure out. Had she known, had she even had the slightest clue as to what all was falling down without even the slightest warning of Timberrrrrr in the park at that very moment, she likely would not have been as calm as she was. For several years now, Jen's life revolved around a schedule. All the hours of her days were marked by a school bell, an alarm clock, an oven timer. There was never really a moment where she could sit back and allow time to pass her by without so much as a warning. Until today...
The cafe was quiet at this time of the day. It was right around the time when people were still at work and children were still doing their afternoon school activities or just at home fighting with their homework and no one was really out to eat at this time. It wasn't often that Jen left her post in her classroom in the afternoons this early. She usually stayed to help the kids with their questions. However, today she just needed to get away. The peace of the diner and the tranquility of the book she was reading put everything in perspective for her. So much had happened in the last few months, and Jen felt as if she was only now coming to terms with all of it. She hoped the bad times were behind them by now.
After a quick glance at the door, Jen noticed someone she knew. It took a while, but eventually, they looked back over at her and smiled. Jen smiled in return and waved. Perhaps it was a silly thing to do, to wave as if to invite someone over to ruin her quiet solitude, but it was also the polite thing to do.
