"I admit that you may have sucky parents," Jack argued, "but if they didn't care would they have asked your friends to be here with you? And your friends probably didn't know what to say. There are a lot more people than you think that are here for you Josie, believe me. It's more than most people have. So you can't keep doing this to yourself." She watched as Josie turned away from her. Jack wanted to take back what she said about letting Alan go but it was already too late. That never made anyone feel good, especially when it was too soon as it was now.
She gave a sigh and thought a moment, just sitting next to the bed. "You know, I think that, despite whatever you fought about, Alan did actually care about you Josie. I really do. Because I think you're a smart girl and I think you would've known if he didn't. The way you talked about him before it sounded like he cared about you and you cared about him. And since he did care, I don't think he would want this for you Jos. I think he would want you to get out and find another way to be happy. From what I remember about him, he didn't like seeing people sad and I know he wouldn't want to have seen you sad, so be happier. It's going to take a long time to be happy the way you were with him again but I believe he would want you to be patient so you could be. I think that's what you have to do Jos."
