Who: Laney and Noah
What: beaching it as an adult, shhh!
When: earlier today
Where: Crescent Beach

Laney needed to stretch her legs. It had been a beautiful week, but she'd been cooped up inside for far too long. Video games were fun, but she couldn't help but feel like she was wasting her summer. Maine was going to get very cold very fast, and even though the temperatures were practically blistering, the air conditioner was only so nice. She eventually wanted some fresh air, regardless of the fact that she would most likely be sweating the moment she stepped outside.

With this in mind, however, she decided it might be a good idea to hit the beach. Dropping her XBox controller on the ground-- she rarely picked up after herself, especially in the summer time-- she headed to her bedroom to change into a suit. She pulled open her drawer and paused. Sitting on top was one of the suits she bought as her older self. A wry smile crossed her features as she picked up the delicate material. And that was it. Her mind was made up. She was going as an eighteen year old.

Minutes later, she exited her house, backpack stuffed with a towel and an ipod slung over her shoulder. Anyone watching her might not have recognized her as she left, apart from Alfie, and possibly Nico or J.J. But she didn't care. She rarely did. She walked with confidence and her head held high the entire way, not stopping to talk to anyone. Once at Crescent Beach, her beach of choice on the island, she spread out her towel and laid down. The sun was in the perfect place to get a tan-- not that she was positive she'd keep her tan once she went back to normal.

[OOC: Anyone feel free to tag this. It's not part of Summer OTA, but I thought it'd be funny for someone to encounter Laney using her power so shamelessly. If someone who knows about her power wants to tag, that might actually be funnier. But I'm all up for someone thinking she's the Evans' cousin 'Melanie'. XD ]

Beaches were not Noah's natural habitat, needless to say. He was more at home in dark, cramped places, but here he was. It was an empty day for him. Nothing to do. He was rather tired of sitting at his and Macy's flat, reading books. Really, he was rather tired of everything. Why not walk on the proverbial wild side, even if that wild side happened to be the tamer side to everyone else?

Exactly.

He was already sitting in a beach chair, feet in the sand, head back, sunglasses perched on his nose, when a blond girl - woman? - someone he'd never seen before, walked onto the beach. Intriguing. It wasn't too often you ran into someone new on the island. It wasn't too often either that that new person happened to be attractive - or happened to be attractive when no alcohol was involved. As it was, Noah watched the girl from over the tops of his sunglasses as she laid out her towel nearby. -
It was a no smoking beach, but that didn't stop Noah from lighting a cigarette right then and there.

He didn't say anything. Not yet.

He might have noticed her, but Laney was completely oblivious to the man watching her. Instead, she fished her sunglasses out of her bag, deciding that it was way too sunny for her liking. She also pulled out some suntan lotion, which she readily proceeded to rub on her arms and legs. Inwardly, she wished that Alfie was there, and scolded herself for not inviting him along. Apart from the enjoyable company, he probably would have volunteered to put the lotion on her back and other hard to reach areas.

As it were, it was up to her to struggle through it. Eventually, she managed to get enough, vowing not to turn over onto her stomach until she absolutely had to, and not to remain that way for very long.

"There," she said out loud, popping the cap on the lotion, putting it back in her bag and settling back down on her towel.

As she continued to be unaware of his existence, Noah just watched the girl. Yes, he was a creep. He had no problem with that assessment. Creeping was an integral part of his personality, after all. And, to be honest, although he loved Macy, it was hard for him to get used to the whole "settling down" thing people apparently did when they got older. - So, here he was, seeking a bit of excitement. Here he was watching this girl drench herself with sun lotion. - The act of such did nothing to Noah. He wasn't one to be so easily turned on. But he found her - well, different. She couldn't be that old. 17? 18? - But she acted like she knew it all, for all her apparent obliviousness.

How could he not find that interesting? - He exhaled a cloud of smoke in her direction.

She smelled the smoke before she saw him. It didn't bother her or anything. She'd tried cigarettes when she was twelve and decided they weren't for her. -But that didn't mean she hated tobacco or anything to do with it. She could recognize why others might choose it as a vice. It was exciting. It made people look cooler. It was-- for her anyways, and also for whoever was smoking on the beach-- against the law. But it tasted bad in her mouth, and she wasn't exactly positive she liked the idea of breathing in something toxic, even with all of it's perks.

Still, she turned, always giving praise to a fellow rule breaker, and smirked in Noah's direction. Laws were made to be broken, especially on an island where they were sparingly enforced.

Noah's eyebrows rose as the girl gave him smirk over her well-oiled shoulder. He inhaled once more, held his breath, and held the thing out to her without a word.

To be fair, Noah had been smoking since he was a kid - 12, maybe. He was told routinely over the years, by strangers and acquaintances alike, the hazards of his habit. But he didn't give a shit. He worked at a bar. - His life was doomed to end early as it was. Why waste it on trying to be a "good" person?

Well. She couldn't just refuse a cigarette because it was bad for her health, could she? One puff wouldn't hurt, especially at the risk of looking uncool, or worse, a square. She wasn't sure who this person was-- he was definitely out of high school-- but she knew she didn't want to look stupid in front of him.

They weren't too far apart. She could just reach his hand with hers, if she stretched enough. And so she did, daintily taking the cigarette between her forefinger and middle and holding it to her lips. For a brief moment, the thought of this strangers mouth being on the end weirded her out, but then she decided she didn't really care. It wasn't like she was going to get diseases or anything. And her rebellious reputation was possibly at stake here.

Laney took a deep drag, holding the smoke in her lungs for a brief second before breathing it out through her nostrils. She might not have enjoyed the taste, but it was a technique she'd long since perfected, just for occasions such as this. "Thanks," she said, passing it back to him.

Noah tilted his chin skyward and exhaled. He smiled, albeit somewhat deviously, watching the girl stretching to reach. She wasn't a smoker. That much was obvious. She took the cigarette - like a pencil, almost. As if it were a foreign object. Likely because it was. She seemed to consider the cigarette a moment before putting it to her lips.

Here she seemed a bit more adept. Smoke trailed out of the girl's nose and blew with the wind. - Noah took the cigarette back and held it, smoldering away, between his fingers. He didn't say anything, he just pushed his sunglasses up his nose and stuck the cigarette in his mouth. He smirked.

She laid back down on the towel and closed her eyes. It was such a weird interaction, she wasn't sure where to go from there. Kids her age were usually pretty outgoing, or at least would have offered their name or something else. This man said nothing. Not even 'you're welcome'. Laney found it odd, but also really intriguing. She'd never encountered this before. Never.

But she didn't want to be the one to break first. And yet, she didn't want him to get bored. Still, she figured waiting a few minutes before she said anything would be best. Wasn't that what all the cool older girls did in the television shows she watched? Acted like they didn't care about the guys they wanted to notice them, and then the guys noticed them just like that? Not that she wanted this stranger for anything more than a conversation... She was happy with Alfie-- in love with him even. But this was new. And she couldn't help her piqued interest.

This was amusing. Noah leaned back in his chair as the girl turned back around to soak in the sun. He would have laughed, would it not have ruined whatever game they were playing. - Macy - if the girl were Macy, she would have demanded, politely, that Noah say 'you're welcome.' She wouldn't have taken the cigarette, certainly, but if she had, she would not have liked Noah's obvious disregard for social norms and/or polite conversation.

This girl, however, seemed completely fine with taking a drag on a stranger's cigarette and then tanning, or whatever the fuck people did at the beach.

Noah continued to smoke, saying nothing.

Social norms be damned. Laney wasn't one for them. She could care less that he wasn't polite. She wasn't always polite, so how could she hold anyone else to that standard? She couldn't, really. But she did wish he said something. Anything. But he didn't, and she was going to hold her ground, no matter what. He didn't seem to be going anywhere yet. So she had time to figure out exactly what women her perceived age did in this situation.

After several minutes of silence, she turned over, exposing her sparsely lotioned back to the sun, and Noah. She knew that Alfie seemed to enjoy her body, so she figured it made sense that other men would. Again, she was only just trying to win this weird competition they were now involved in-- if it even was a competition. Maybe Noah just didn't want to talk to her, and she was making this all up in her head.

She turned over. It took a few minutes, through which Noah simply sat and smoked, but she did. She had a body that was different than Macy's. It was - well, it was new. She was tall, he could tell even as she stretched out on her towel. And she had curves where Macy did not, matched with a face that was a little less sweet. But that wasn't a bad thing. Not at all.

Noah didn't hide the fact that he was looking at her. No. And after a moment of doing so, he propped his chin in his hand and stubbed his cigarette out in the sand.

Ah. He was watching her. She was winning, it seemed. And even though she was now consciously deciding to speak first, she knew she was still winning. "Pictures last longer, you know." That was it. She didn't bother to look at him as she said it. She kept her head on her arm, her eyes hidden behind her shades. It was a simple sentence, and one that she'd likely said before. But somehow, it had a different meaning now. A more adult meaning.

The girl spoke again. And this time Noah couldn't help it. He laughed. She was very nonchalant and distant in an apparently calculated way. She also happened to say something Noah hadn't expected. At all. Maybe if he had been fifteen, he would have expected it, but even then, ...

"I do know," he said in response, grinning all the while. He lifted himself from the seat for a moment, slipping his phone from his back pocket. "You won't mind then?"

Now, she bothered to look in his direction. He was pulling his phone out. She smirked. So, she had piqued his interest. Yes. She was definitely winning, then. Although, she still wasn't sure what it was she was winning. "If you have to, I can't stop you, can I?" She turned her attention elsewhere once again, biting her lip to stop herself from saying anything more. She couldn't wait to tell Alfie all about this. She'd probably leave out the part about him taking a picture of her in a bathing suit, but! He didn't recognize her. He couldn't tell she was only fourteen! Her powers were working tremendously, and she was having an adult conversation with a grown up.

This. Was. Awesome.

"Adult" conversation.

Noah wasn't actually about to take a photo of the girl. Firstly, because Macy would likely find it and get upset. Secondly, because - well, he didn't want to. He was not one to find photos ...attractive. He found people attractive. And here was one right in front of him, looking away and biting her lip. What did he need with a photo?

"You could, but you obviously don't want to," replied Noah, raising his eyebrows again, as if to say: eh? amirite?

She peered at him over her sunglasses but showed little to no emotion. He was completely wrong. Laney had been telling the truth. She couldn't stop him, could she? He could easily say he was stopping, and then just do it anyways. She'd been in that position before. She'd actually been the one lying. So no, he was not right. But she wasn't about to point that out.

"I suppose." She shrugged. "But you don't seem like the type that can be stopped." And she would know. Water tended to seek it's own level.

Noah smirked at the girl eying him over her sunglasses. He dropped his phone into his lap and picked up his carton of cigarettes from the seat. He slowly took one cigarette out of the box, lit it, and returned the box to its spot. He was mulling over the girl's words as he took a drag.

"And how would you know that, I wonder."

She watched him carefully light up a new cigarette. It was a filthy habit, and she was glad she'd decided not to go that route back in junior high. She wondered briefly if Alfie would have agreed to be her boyfriend had she had smoker's breath and figured that the answer was probably 'no'.

"You remind me of myself." It was getting hard for Laney to word things like a grown up. She usually did poorly in English -- and every other class, for that matter, but English especially. Her words were, for probably the first time in a while, carefully executed and thought over as she spoke to this stranger now.

Now Noah's interest was really piqued. He had, as far as he knew, never reminded anyone of themselves. Mostly, he was apparently too unlike other people, that they disliked him for it. So this - this statement? - he was curious about it, and what exactly the girl supposed she meant.

"Is that so?" He exhaled, smoke escaping from the corners of his smile. "So you are unstoppable?"

Laney pinched the sand between her finger tips and let it fall back to the ground slowly. She didn't want to appear too eager to continue the conversation. She wanted to appear like she was mentally checked out, and not at all interested in anything he had to say; rather, she was only in it for mundane beach conversation and something to do. This wasn't true, of course, but she wanted him to think that anyways.

"So I've been told," she said nonchalantly. Truthfully, Laney was one of those people who couldn't be tied down. She was constantly moving, constantly trying to break down barriers, and constantly trying to question and challenge authority. She hated being told what to do. Hated it.

"Aha." Noah kept his eyes on the girl as he nodded, before sweeping them around the beach. There weren't too many people around for a summer's day. He turned his attention back to the girl who was playing with sand.

She did seem young, in a way. She likely was. His mind had settled on the girl being 19. She was, by all counts, younger than he was. But, and this amused him the most, she did like to act beyond her years. Which, granted, Noah had too when he was her age. After sucking on his cigarette briefly, Noah asked: "How else do you think we're similar?"

How else were they similar? She wasn't sure. She could probably make something up. "Well, for starters, we're both stuck on this shitty island." Actually, Laney had no problem with staying on Frye Island. She liked it here. She had no reason to want to venture out into the big, wide world. Everything she needed was within an appropriate distance.

"I also remember when I thought smoking was cool." She eyed his cigarette. "I was about twelve." Two years ago. Har har. She turned her attention back to the sand.

Noah smiled patiently at the girl. Shitty island indeed. He wasn't sure who she was, but it seemed to be that she was a visitor. How she was stuck here, he didn't know. And, then, he laughed again, this time at her mention of how passè she found smoking to be. He raised his eyebrows in disbelief. "About five minutes ago, was that?"

Noah gave an amused, little shrug and sat back in his beach chair. The girl laid back down, apparently deciding it was time to do what she came to do. He continued smoking, his eyes on her for a moment's time, before he reached to his side and picked up the book he'd left slumped in the sand. It was an extremely ratty hardback copy of Franny and Zooey. He'd read the book a good thousand times, but whatever. He liked it.

Moving his sunglasses to the top of his head, he began to read. A little ignoring tended to go a long way.
