Makayla made sure to leave the clinic early to get things done at the movie theater faster than spending an hour or two there talking with employees and not getting what needed to be done. She wanted to make it home fast to prepare dinner, make sure the kids were happy with where they were sleeping, and really keep her eye on Carter. She wanted the boy to be comfortable here and not feel as though he couldn’t do what he did when living with his grandmother.
She wanted to make something simple for dinner, and not try to burn the place down like she feels she might one of these days. Baked macaroni and cheese was on the menu and if the kids wanted to protest about the choice of vegetables as the side dish, they could complain in their school books and not toward a video game. She was teasing, of course. As long as they got some greens in their bellies she would be pleased.
Talking to Travis about their new addition was on her mind more than finishing up laundry, putting the right clothing away, making the kids' beds, and making sure Carter liked rooming with Julius. Gabriel was pleased to have his own room finally. She could get that easily from the way he carried himself around the house lately. He also didn’t seem to mind Carter living here, which was new. Because she was ready for a teenage tantrum after bringing the boy into the house.
After the house chores were done with, she attended to things in the office while waiting for Travis to make his appearance. He always did like pestering her when she was filling out checks to pay the bills or anything else that needed her attention. But when he came into the room, she was ready for him and looked up from the laptop the moment he blocked the entry way of the door. “I really hope you don’t mind my impulse decision to allow Carter to stay with us until someone finds his real parents.”
