Truth be told, for how amazing last night felt and with the way his luck had been going, Eisen should have expected some kind of crash. When he heard the clang of the plate hitting the hard wood floor, Eisen jolted upright. He’d always had a talent for sleeping through anything, but the plate was close to him and it cracked and shattered to a thousand pieces on his floor. His eyes darted around the room, and then when they fell on Lexie, his heart sank.
The ‘should’ve, could’ve, would’ve’ ran through his head at a thousand miles an hour, though ironically, none of it had anything to do with Rory. Should’ve locked my door. Could’ve called her last night and told her to come over. That would’ve made a difference, all cycled through his mind as he looked at Lexie with wide eyes.
What did he say? He didn’t regret being with Rory. He didn’t regret anything, except maybe that Lexie had to find out like this. Swallowing thickly, he looked at her and tried to find the words in his head to… he didn’t know what he wanted to accomplish, frankly. Make this better? No, he was pretty sure it was past that point. Calm Lexie down? No, he was pretty sure it was past that point, too. So what did he do? He looked at Rory for a split second, a split second that was hopefully intense enough to tell him that this didn’t change anything about how Eisen felt, then looked back at Lexie.
“I… we… I’m sorry, Lexie,” he started, though he was sure it wouldn’t do any good. “You weren’t supposed to find out like this. I was going to tell you. Later…”
