It had been a long day. Truth be told, most of her days were long days. She had a facade of a bookshop owner to maintain and her real work as scientist. La Bouquinèrie was a big business. The bookstore was enormous, it also had a cafe, sold books on the internet... It demanded her time and energy, whether she liked it or not. There were so many things to keep track of, every time. It made a lot of money, and it was a main source of cash for her and for Alex's needs, but it surely could be tiring.
There was also the research, and her job as a scientist, and the expectations about the experiment and the permanent need to control every variable, to keep an eye on the genetically altered, to experiment on the unborn. She could feel she was being part of something grand, of something that could change science forever.
And, of course, there was her family. Her husband, whom she didn't really want to think about at that moment, and Alex, her only son, always demanding her attention. A handsome, good boy, but with a complex she could not tell how on Earth he had nurtured. When your teenage son texts you because he hasn't seen you around, you just know something's off, she thought to herself as she parked her Fluence inside the garage. The house was silent, with the exception of the living room's lights on. She wondered why a young boy like Alex wasn't out in a Friday night, asking herself if there was something wrong between him and his friends. She entered the house quietly, leaving her car keys on the hall.
