WHO: Mal and Ed
WHAT: New Years Eve date!
WHEN: Nighttime, we’ll say about 8:30?
WHERE: Skating!
RATING: Likely not very high.
STATUS: Incomplete.
To be honest, when Mal had texted Ed, ending up with a date was the last thing she had expected. She wasn’t complaining however. All she could do was smile as she strode toward the skating rink, new skates over her shoulder and a little bit of unexpected confidence in her step. She’d spent far more time than usual picking out something nice to wear, but for now, it was covered by her coat. Her jeans were still visible, obviously, but that was natural.
She sat at the bench on the edge of the outdoor rink to wait for Ed, gloved hand pushing her hair behind her ear where it peeked out from the edge of her hat. Really, she could have dressed warmer, but wasn’t it a date thing to look cute? Besides, it wasn’t that cold, was it? Sun had set and it was a little chillier, but it was nothing that she couldn’t deal with.
It was hard to describe how good it had felt to get that text from Ed, first off getting her feelings for him out into the open and second of all, being able to say that she actually had a date with him. She’d been sure when she’d seen Lexie and Ed together on that little date that her chances were pretty much nil. No one who had ever liked Lexie, liked her too. They weren’t cut from the same cloth; weren’t the same type. Boys generally had types, right? Her brothers certainly had types. Lexie types. Disney princess types. That was what most boys wanted, wasn’t it?
Not Ed, apparently. Apparently he transcended the general ‘boys won’t like two girls from as opposite sides of the spectrum as she and Lexie’ stereotype. And she wasn’t complaining.
They couldn’t have picked a better evening for this. Winter always had this way of proving exactly how beautiful the world could be. The snow around the rink was untouched and white, and the sky was practically clear, so aside from the city lights and the skating rink surroundings, the only thing she could see were stars. People generally didn’t like spending a lot of time outside in the cold, so it was quiet. Empty. They’d be the only two there, which was even better for their first date. Now, of course, all she needed was for him to show up.
