How could it be possible for a human skull to contain such pain? Didn't people say that be human brain couldn't feel anything? At the moment, Dietre was convinced that whoever said that was a damned liar. He lay in a hospital bed, in one of his periods of lucidity when the throbbing in his head that blotted everything out died down. He could think, but not very well. He could only recall bits and pieces of things that had happened since the world went black in his dinning room.
He remembered opening his eyes and being surrounded by police. He had tried to get up, made it to his hands and knees before vomiting, then blackness again. After that there were a lot of voices, but they were distorted and he couldn't make out what they said. He knew he wasn't at home anymore, but in a hospital. He could tell by the smell of it. Someone opened his eye and shined a light into it. It felt like they had jabbed a fistful of needles inside, punching right through the socket into his brain. They had to hold him down and force his eyelid open to do the other, crooning the whole while that it was important to see if his brain was damaged or not, but Dietre, at the time, suspected it was just a way of punishing him for what he had done.
Everything else was mostly a blur. There were a lot of doctors, taking his blood, x-rays, and asking him questions that he couldn't focus on long enough to even try to answer. He heard the word, 'concussion' a few times.
But things had begun to settle down after a while. He could make out the beeping of machines around him, but he didn't want to open his eyes to see, the ceiling lights were too bright. Every light was too bright, they all hurt terribly and made him dizzy and nauseous. He tried to lift a hand to shade his view, but couldn't. They were strapped down. Did they think he would attack someone? He thought he remembered a voice saying it was for his own protection. But was it really?
There were people outside the room. Just beyond the door.
