Katie placed five mugs filled with colored dye on the table in front of her. To the left, she had a container of eggs and on her right, were the clear colored crayons. She had paper towels at an easy reach, just in case of spills, and a sponge not too far away for the same. She wasn't sure why she was so excited to color eggs-- well okay, that was a lie. Katie knew exactly why she was so excited. She'd colored eggs every year for her entire life, but she'd never colored them with a boy, save James. And he really didn't count, as much as she loved him.
He wasn't anywhere to be seen, now. She figured he'd probably come home later, and she had another carton of eggs, in case he wanted to join her. Really, she just didn't want him to feel left out. Though, to be honest, she never knew if James was as into the lame holiday stuff as she was.
Shrugging to herself, she glanced at the clock. It was about time for Calvin to get there and--! Oh, there was the doorbell. She jumped out of her seat like it was on fire, and raced her mother to the door. "I'll get it," she said, giving her mother a look. Mrs. Baker smiled at her daughter and simply walked away. There wasn't any need to meet him. Everyone knew the Parker boy was a good kid.
"Hey," Katie said, when she pulled open the door. "Come in."
