Matthew hadn't expected for his Valentine's Day date to go so well. Going in, he'd thought that he'd make a friend, maybe have some fun that night or ask for a second date in the future. What had happened had thrown him for a loop, but in the best way possible. He'd instead met a wonderful woman that he instantly wanted to make a real go at it with. Sookie had turned out to be amazing, and he couldn't believe his luck.
Of course, that didn't mean that he didn't have a few worries, mostly about himself and if he was worth a lady like Sookie. Even on his good days, he thought of himself as a bit of a mess. On his bad days, well...you get the idea. Matthew didn't have much self worth on those days. Could she deal with that? She said that she could, but getting to see it in person could change things.
He was relieved to get to talk to Thor. The two of them had easily made friends, and he was relieved to have found that here. They had arranged to meet at The End Zone tonight, and, when he walked in, he looked around, figuring that it would be easy to spot the large, blond Viking.
He wasn't wrong. Thor was already seated at the bar, his large hands wrapped around a beer stein, chatting animatedly with a blonde woman behind the bar. "The lady Sif, the warriors three and I would go on many adventures," anyone who was close to him would hear him say. He could have regaled the woman for hours, but fortunately (or unfortunately for her, however the case may be), he spotted Matthew and gave out a cheerful shout: "There's my new friend! Matthew! Come join me! Meet Morgan. She's as charming as she is lovely."
Matthew chuckled as he walked over, grinning at Morgan as he sat. He and Morgan didn't really know each other too well from home, but he was at least familiar with her. "Sounds like you're already having a grand old time without me," he joked.
"He's certainly full of stories," Morgan agreed in that dry tone of hers. She couldn't hide her blush at the compliment, though. She smiled at Matthew as well, recognizing a familiar face. "Are you having the same?" She indicated Thor's drink. "Or would you and your liver like to take it easy?"
"I'll have the same," Matthew told her. "My liver is never taking it easy." He knew he couldn't keep up with Thor and wouldn't try (the man had the physiology of a literal god, OK?), but that didn't mean that he wouldn't drink plenty himself.
Morgan smirked, making a mental note to keep an eye on Matthew (not that she wouldn't be looking over in that direction anyway because Thor was just fun to look at). "Alright." She poured the drink and set it in front of him. "You two just let me know when you want a refill."
"We will," Thor replied, smiling at Morgan (who blushed again and shuffled away). He slapped a hand on Matthew's shoulder. "It's good to see you, my friend! Are you well?"
Matthew nodded, giving Morgan a smile as she went off. "I'm doing a good bit better, honestly," he admitted. "Has a lot to do with what I'm going to admit was...probably the best honest to god date I've ever had." He still couldn't believe he had gotten to bloody lucky.
"Why, I do believe you're blushing!" Thor teased in that booming jovial tone of his. He picked up his stein and took a long sip, letting out a satisfied 'ahh' sound soon after. "So! Tell me about this person! Who are they? What are they like?" He didn't want to assume the person's gender as he rather got the impression that Matthew swung a few different ways. "And what did you get up to on your 'date'?"
Matthew laughed a little. He did swing a few different ways, actually, so he appreciated the non-assumption. "Her name's Sookie Stackhouse, and she's this gorgeous, sweet Southern belle that I kind of thought they only wrote books about and didn't exist in real life," he admitted. "She cooked dinner for us and you and Darcy have to come by during the next holiday and have some of her food." He grinned, a little lost in thought. "I've never been so excited for a date where we only kissed," he admitted. Yep, Matthew was in full swoon mode right now.
Thor gasped, bringing his knuckles to his mouth to stifle the sound. "It sounds like you had a perfect night, and of course Darcy and I will come around for a meal. We don't exactly cook ourselves, but I'm sure that we'll find a good bakery for dessert." Frankly Thor was shit when it came to cooking, but he made an attempt sometimes. "Sookie." He repeated the name and decided that he liked the sound of it. "You kissed!" He thumped Matthew's shoulder. "Good for you! You deserve to be happy!"
"It really was pretty damn perfect." Sookie seemed interested in him, despite his many faults. It was something of a relief, honestly. A part of him had kind of resigned himself to being alone, at least romantically, so finding someone here, much less someone so wonderful, was nothing short of a miracle to him. He laughed when Thor thumped him on the shoulder. "I am feeling pretty damn happy, honestly." Which was a surprise, given his mood pre-Valentine's Day.
Thor would have argued that Matthew was a catch if he'd brought up that he thought that he'd be alone while on Galador. Fortunately, that didn't seem to be the case, though! "Details, my friend! I demand details! What did you talk about?" His eyes widened. "What did you wear?" He planned to tell Darcy every single thing.
"Well, Darcy ended up finding me flailing about and helped me pick out something decent." Matthew could normally dress himself pretty damn well, but going on an actual date had sent him into a nervous tailspin. "We talked about...well, ourselves. She told me a lot about her life at her home, about her family there. I told her about mine, what I did for a living there." He was starting to think that maybe he should get back into it here. He hadn't been able to help Bella, but maybe he could help others here.
"!" Thor exclaimed. "And you didn't ask me for advice," he said about the outfit. He sounded aghast, but was clearly teasing with that big grin on his face. "Talking about family and home is a good place to start." He and Darcy hadn't started out like that, though. But every couple was different. Even as thick as he could be sometimes, he knew that much. "Do you have any common ground?"
Matthew laughed. "I'll make sure to ask for your advice next time, mate," he joked back. "Turns out we came from kind of similar worlds. Both of our worlds had vampires and other supernatural creatures running about." Lots of people here came from supernatural based universes, but it seemed just as many came from completely normal places.
Thor nodded. Where he'd come from, his first visit to Midgard had been an entirely alien experience. Human did things so backwards. He blinked. Why did that come to mind? "Something tells me that she's the kind of woman that..." Now how would Darcy put it? "... wouldn't take any shit?"
Well, humans DID do things so backwards sometimes. Matthew would happily agree with that. He laughed when Thor deduced that Sookie wouldn't take shit off of anybody. "Absolutely not. One of the many things that I like about her." Yeah, Matthew was completely besotted with her.
"Well good for you!" Thor refrained from thumping Matt on the back again since he didn't know his strength when he had a few drinks in him, but his enthusiasm was still very clear. He finished his drink and called out "Another!" over at Morgan, who was only all too happy to serve him. "And what about work? Have you considered what you'd like to do for a profession here?" Thor had been contemplating that question himself lately. He considered protecting the planet as a great honor and a job in itself - but Galador had more than enough protection without his help. Maybe it was time to branch out into other things.
Matthew laughed as Thor called for another drink. Damn, even he wasn't quite finished with his drink yet! He thought about the question for a moment before answering. "I'm not sure, honestly. What I did at home isn't exactly in high demand here." He'd fought against being a Watcher for so long, only to finally find his place in it. Then he came here and now he didn't have to do it. "Not too sure what to do with my life now that I have more choice in it." Somewhere, his father was laughing. He was sure of it.
"Would you believe that we have that in common?" He gave Matthew's shoulder a squeeze, then: "Morgan! There you are!" as he accepted another stein of beer. He flashed a wink at the woman and watched her scurry away again before continuing the conversation: "What do we do here now when our work back home doesn't hold the same meaning?" Oh no. Deep and meaningful!Thor. "Where do we go from here?"
Matthew had to smile when he saw Thor turning on the charm a bit for Morgan. If he hadn't fallen so hard for Sookie, he'd still be trying to charm the pants literally off the giant blond Viking. "Haven't figured that part out just yet. I could always try working at a bookstore." After the bombing when he'd lost his memories, he'd worked at a bookstore and had done well enough at it. "You could work as a bouncer for one of the bars around here. Who's going to mess with a literal God of Thunder when he says they've had enough to drink and need to go home?" Well, Matthew would at least argue, but he was a drunk. He certainly wouldn't fight the guy, though!
"I should ask if they're hiring here," Thor agreed. He knew that Morgan liked him at least and he'd strike an imposing figure for those who tried to cause trouble (of course, he suspected that both of Morgan's wives would do that just as well too, despite how little they appeared). "Maybe I could council people like me too?" He considered aloud. He took a long sip of his drink. "I could see you working at a bookstore." He paused and considered that. "The history is different here. I imagine you'd have to read 'the classics' again. Who knows what's different here from where you came from."
"They just might be, plus they can advertise that they have Thor working for them. Should even drum up some extra business," Matthew joked. Then again, some people probably would just come here and stare at him. "And give it a shot, man. You'd probably be great at it." That was something to think about, though. "Probably. Wouldn't hurt me to brush up on the classics, anyway."
"You could always look up 'Thor, God of Thunder' while you're at it," Thor teased with a wink. Still, he took Matthew's suggestion to heart. He'd discuss it with Darcy too. "You know, you're one of my best friends, Matthew." He put a hand over his heart. "And if you ever need anything in life, know that you can always come to me."
"You've definitely become one of my best friends, too," Matthew replied with a grin. He never expected that he would become such good friends with the God of Thunder of all people, but you couldn't exactly predict the future.
