They Should Have Their Own Show!
Who: Thor and Darcy
Where: Starting in Thor's Room, then a communal kitchen
When: Thursday, July 9th
What: Thor and Darcy decide to cook!
Rating: Low
So, nothing had exploded lately, which, while nice, meant that Darcy had gotten a little bored. Yeah, bored on a giant spaceship thing, who would have guessed? So, figuring that she needed to go about and make her own fun, she figured out which room was Thor's and headed off for it, knocking on the door. She had absolutely no idea if he was there or not, but she thought that it was at least a good place to start, right? If not here, then she would start thinking of other places to look for him.
Thor had just finished changing into what he hoped was acceptable attire (dark blue jeans with a white collared shirt and black suit jacket, all tailored to fit his hulking frame) and he couldn't help it but quirk an eyebrow when he heard the knock at the door. He knew that Miles was out for the time being and he didn't find pleasure in the thought that whoever it was he'd likely have to send away. Still, he walked over and answered the door, his pensive expression changing almost immediately as a smile lit up his face. "Lady Darcy! This is a pleasant surprise!"
Darcy smiled back up at him. "What's going on, big guy? Looking good in the snazzy duds. I didn't interrupt some sort of date night, did I?" she asked, reaching up and giving him a hug anyway. She couldn't help it. He was quite the cuddly thing, wasn't he?
He might come across as unhuggable, but he really did adore displays of affection and expected them from Darcy by now. He hugged her back, a smile still on his face as he thanked her for the compliment. "No, no, nothing like that," he assured her. "I thought that I might head out and see if there was anything worth seeing, but now I'd much rather be in your company." Some people might confuse him for being smooth, but he was just being honest.
If she didn't realize that he was just being honest, she MIGHT be worried that he was hitting on her! "Then let's go out together! Maybe we can go in the kitchen and experiment with the food they have here, although it would be an awful thing to ruin those clothes of yours!"
"I have more," Thor laughed, pleased with the idea. "I've been told that there's a restaurant where they cook food in front of you," he suggested. "I'm sure they wouldn't mind if we were hands on." Plus, the idea of these two in a kitchen sounded too fun to pass up!
"Oh, are you thinking of Hibachi grills? Yeah, they're Japanese food that you watch the cooks perform little tricks with the food while he cooks it," Darcy said. "I would probably kill myself flinging a knife around, but you're a big warrior guy, you can probably do it. Let's go!" Now she was excited to see if Thor could chop a tomato in the air or something like that.
"I'll make sure you don't kill yourself," he told her with a laugh, grinning at her enthusiasm as he followed behind her, leaving the apartment and heading over to the elevator. He'd been on board Knowhere long enough now that he knew how to get about (without flying, even!). "All this talk of food has made me hungry."
Darcy was always a bit on the enthusiastic side, wasn't she? "Me, too, dude. Now we definitely need to rustle up some grub." She would be very happy to dig into some meal or another, even if it was a microwaved pizza at this point!
"It's been a while since we've seen each other. You haven't been 'tasering' unsuspecting people now, have you?" One blessed good thing about being around people from Earth was that Thor had developed a sense of humor! He didn't recall having much of one before. He stepped into the elevator after it had made its way to their floor, and tried and failed to keep a straight face.
She laughed and shook her head. "Nope, I've been on mostly good behavior so far," she teased, winking at him. It was nice to see him developing a sense of humor! He used to take things so damn literally, didn't he? "Haven't had a need to taze anyone just yet."
"And hopefully you won't have to. But if anyone should cause you grief let me know and I'll take care of them." Oh, he was sure that Darcy could take care of herself, but like he wasn't going to offer to pummel someone for her.
She laughed. "And as much as I don't mind tasing anyone who starts something, I will be more than happy to sic my big friend with a hammer on them, too." When the elevator stopped, she stepped out and headed in the direction of the kitchen.
He followed behind her with a happy smile on his face. "What is your favorite kind of food, anyway, Darcy?" He couldn't help it but ask curiously. Not that he had much experience with food on Midgard, but he was trying, okay!
Darcy had to think on that for a moment. "Hard to pick, really. I like all kinds of stuff. Have you had sushi before? That stuff is amazing." He'd been here for a while now, but she had no idea just what he'd gotten to eat of Earth food.
Thor narrowed his eyes thoughtfully. "Is that the one that's raw fish wrapped in seaweed?" He asked, wrinkling his nose distastefully. Well, clearly the expression on his face answered her question. He was adorable. He followed her into the communal kitchen area and walked over to the fridge, opening it up and ducking his head down to look inside. At least he'd figured out what fridges were used for in his time on earth.
She had to giggle at his face. "Actually, they're not all raw. We need to find a sushi restaurant around this place and see if we can find one that you like." A food that Thor didn't want to inhale like a walking trashcan? That alone might be one for the record books. "Although I worry what some people around here would qualify as sushi, too." Following his lead, she started looking around in the cabinets, seeing if there was anything around that she knew how to prepare.
"I would be willing to try," he replied, pulling out packaged meat and inspecting it. "Although I am partial to this thing you call 'chicken'." What he had wasn't exactly chicken, though. He wasn't sure exactly what is was. It was more of a pinkish color. "Do we dare try it?" He asked, showing her what he had.
"Chicken is also awesome," she agreed, coming over to look at what he had. "I don't think that's chicken, though..." She pursed her lips in thought for a moment before shrugging. "Eh, why not? Earth's got a saying: When in Rome. It basically means be willing to try and go with the local culture, which includes food." Although god knew what this was. "It would be nice if they at least labeled this stuff, though."
"But half the fun is guessing!" He laughed, setting the meat aside on the counter. "What else should we try?" He asked, poking his head inside the pantry. He pulled out an onion and gave it an exploratory sniff. "This, I've seen this before!"
He was certainly adventurous, wasn't he! "Sure, why not," she said, laughing. "And that's an onion. Good for chopping up and mixing into things, but we need more than an onion to go with our 'not chicken.'" She started rummaging around again herself.
He set the onion aside and pulled out something that looked like asparagus, but was more of a spice and added that to his growing pile. "I think I've had onion before! Possibly on one of those things you call hamburgers." He was adorable when he tried, he really was.
He really really was! "Yup, that would be a good place to have an onion," she agreed, finding something that she was pretty sure was broccoli (or at least close enough) and setting it on their growing pile as well. "I hope they have butter here..."
He added some potatoes (he knew what those were!) and poked his head back into the fridge, actually pulling out a tub of butter. "Look, something that's labeled!" It was the simple things in life.
"Awesome. Now if we can just hunt down some salt and pepper, I think we can at least get started," she said. Not that she was a master cook or anything. Far from it, but she knew you needed salt and pepper to make things taste good, and butter made ALL vegetables better.
He went to looking for the salt and pepper, actually quite enjoying hunting for food this way. It was another kind of adventure! "What should we try cooking first? Or should we throw it all in together?"
"Hmm...well, depends on exactly what we want to do...do you want your potato kind of whole and baked, or peeled and turned into like, diced potatoes or something?" she asked him. "Either way, potatoes take a little longer to cook, especially if we go the baked route."
"I do like baked... but I'm also hungry now." Well, that helped with the decision making process! "Let us dice them." He poked around in the pantry for a minute or two before exclamating with joy: "Found them!" He handed her two small containers labeled 'salt' and 'pepper' with a grin on his face.
"Fantastic," she said with a grin, taking them and setting them down on the counter. "So...we need to cut up the onion, broccoli, and potatoes. I think we can cook the asparagus as is in a pan with butter, if cooking shows I'm half remembering are correct," she admitted with a laugh.
"You would know more than I!" Typically he had his food made for him, or at least he used to. Cooking was still a new experience. But one he seemed to really enjoy. He pulled open a few drawers before locating a knife and testing the blade. Pleased with its sharpness, he grabbed a chopping block and went to work cutting an onion.
She figured that he was used to having cooking done for him, but she was glad to see him get to work on the onion. Looking around and finding a knife herself, she got to work on the potatoes, dicing them up. "Yeah, but only a little. We'll figure out this stuff together!"
"It's another kind of adventure!" He smiled, cutting into the onion to peel off the skin. His eyes started to water the more he got into it. "These onions are treacherous! My eyes!" He almost went to rub at them but wisely stopped himself.
Darcy giggled when he claimed that the onions were treacherous. "The joys of cooking," she said, grabbing a towel and walking over, handing it to him. "Definitely wash your hands before you touch your eyes or you'll swear vengeance on all onions."
"I think I might do that already," he grumbled cutely, accepting the towel with a thank you. Once the onion was cut up he did as she suggested and washed his hands before toweling them dry and wiping the tears from his eyes. "I might like how they taste, but I do not like the preparation!"
"And yet you survived it like a champ." She had just about finished cutting up the potatoes as well, washing off her hands afterward, too. "OK, if you'll dice up the meat, I'll do the broccoli, and then we can get to cooking, which is one step closer to eating!"
"Yes! Eating!" That was the desired end result! He opened up the packaging and gave the meat an exploratory sniff. It didn't smell off, so that was something! He laid the meat out on the cutting board and diced it up as instructed. "We should do this more often!"
She smiled. "You know what? We really should. I'm having a really good time with you." She needed to get out a bit more and hang out with other people, but Thor was also a bit of home that she had with her.
Thor found it oddly nice to do something that didn't involve fighting in some way. Plus, Darcy was lovely company. He gave her one of his happy grins and finally set aside his knife. "I think we're just about ready," he proclaimed.
It really was rare for him to be doing something that didn't involve fighting, wasn't it? She nodded after finishing up the broccoli. "Yup, I think we can roll with it now. Let's find a pan and get started."
Thor opened up a few cupboards and found a pan surprisingly quickly. He was starting to find his way around this place! He then knelt down to inspect the stove top. "Should I be worried about having you around open flames?" He joked.
She just laughed. "Nah, I'm much more fearsome around electricity, remember?" Darcy teased. As he was checking the stove, she moved all of the food closer. "Should I be worried about you?"
He looked up at her and smirked. "I, too, am much more fearsome around electricity." God of thunder, after all! He stood back up and... took a step back. "Still, it might be best if you light it." Ha!
"Guess you and me have that in common then," she said, returning his smirk. With a chuckle, she scooted over and lit the stove, placing the pan on the burner. "Pass me our meat, oh thunder god."
He did so. He was good at taking orders, it seemed! Okay, and he was a little bit of a people pleaser. Thor gave her a light hip bump as they got to work. "I think we should put on music," he decided, walking over to turn on the radio that was on top of the refrigerator. "Clint taught me how to use these." He sounded pleased to know such a simple thing. He flicked through the channels. Apparently Knowwhere had a few broadcasts! He found one song that he liked and left the station there.
"Really? I wasn't aware Cupid was the teaching type," Darcy said with a smirk. Yeah, she had seen ALL the memes on the board and had just basically killed herself laughing. TOO hilarious for words. When the song At This Moment came on, she just started giggling. She really couldn't help it at this point.
"Cupid?" Thor laughed. Hey, he got that reference! He was learning! When she started giggling he gave her a puzzled smile. "What's so funny? I think the song is pretty."
She grinned at him when showed that he had gotten the reference. It was fantastic that he was getting more things by the day! "The song is pretty, but maybe a touch dramatic," she said, still leaving the station where it was. It was a nice song.
"And our lives aren't dramatic?" He asked with a quirk of an eyebrow, returning to her at her station to see how the food was going.
That quirk of an eyebrow just made her giggle harder. "Fair enough, fair enough," she said, still smiling as she went back to working on the food. "You're right, though. Our lives are ALL about the drama."
He gently took the pair of tongs from her so he could stir the food lazily as well. "I don't think that I'd have it any other way, though," he admitted.
She smiled and shook her head. "Nah, I admit, I like the excitement, too." She then laughed. "Honestly, I'm not even sure what I'd have done with my degree at this point if you hadn't of shown up."
He couldn't help it but give her that big goofy grin of his. "And you're very welcome for that," he joked.
