Law and Order, Vampire Division [03 Jun 2008|02:30pm]
"This is extremely irregular, Agent Hutchinson. We don't usually allow visitors after hours, even with proper identification. Are you sure your superiors don't have their wires crossed?"

"I work irregular hours, Ma'am," Grace answered, holding her identification wallet open so the caseworker could see the badge within. "Got trapped in meetings all day, couldn't manage the drive until after dark. DHS never sleeps, not in times like these. I'm sure you understand."

The caseworker's name was Emily Paxton, and she was a plump, near-sighted woman in her late thirties with dyed black hair and heavy-framed glasses. She was studying the badge as if it were the Dead Sea Scrolls, squinting at it in the dim light offered by the streetlamp, and finally she clucked her tongue disapprovingly and handed it back. "Very well," she said. "The boys sleep in one room, the girls in another. I'll have to ask you to be quiet, so as not to wake them."

She climbed behind the wheel of the Crown Vic, produced her keys. Almost home. "I'll make sure to put in a good word for you with the brass. We can always use someone willing to do their duty as a citizen."

Grace pulled the vehicle out of the parking lot at a snail's pace, then entered traffic heading north. She'd stash the kid at her hotel, then wait for Mount Blanchard to erupt. That money was getting closer and closer to becoming a reality.

The vampire looked into the blank mirror where her reflection should have been, gave herself a wink she couldn't see. "I'm gettin' slicker all the time..."
