Note: Takes place before 'At the Tracks'

Five days. For five days Grace stayed indoors feeling herself heal up, bitching about it every second. It was the wrist that was the main problem, and when the bones obliged her by starting to knit back together she was immediately ready to get out and do something. Most of a week was enough, damn it!

She'd said good-bye to Reuben before she went out, the two of them standing in silence in the hotel parking lot before he retreated into the shadows. He'd told her to watch her back, then muttered something about seeing her in a year or so. She'd decided to believe him. Things were afoot, it seemed, big things.

"Hope you didn't think I'd lost your number," she said to Joseph as she slid into the booth seat across from him. She was at about eighty percent, almost ninety. It was time to get back to business. "I've been indisposed."

Indisposed )

The vampire offered a smile that was more than a little sharp around the corners at the retreating car, stepping back into the shadows as the tail-lights disappeared. Smart guy. Maybe a little too smart. She hoped a windowless van didn't snatch him up.

She walked out of the alley with the case still tucked protectively under her arm, and she walked three blocks farther down the street until she came to a phone booth. Stepping inside the small enclosure, she shut the glassed-in doors behind her and dropped coins into the slot. She punched in the number she wanted in a buisnesslike fashion, then waited until she heard a voice on the other end of the line.

"Yeah, I'd like to speak to Agent Rimes, please..."
