Big damn heroes, sir.
An unnatural fog was heavy over the village, people were being turned upside down at the will of some unseeable force, and yet Marlene had not felt so utterly normal since arriving at the village. She had put down her black jogging capris and a green sweater earlier that morning, intending to run a bit before seeing the fog and staying indoors. But now Amelia was out there, and she had settled firmly into mission mode. She was a member of the Order, and a pregnant civilian needed help. She could deal with this. She found a backpack and put in as many water bottles as would fit, as well as plenty of fruit and a pillow for Amelia to rest on if need be.
She tossed a blanket in for good measure before charming the bag to be feather light and then heading out the door. Marlene could sense something was wrong the moment the mist hit her, but she focused her feet on the ground. She didn't look 'up' or 'down', just at her feet as she ran towards where she thought Amelia was, breathing in through her nose and out through her mouth as she began to chant mantras in her head about being more powerful than the pain in her calves, and other crap she'd found in a book about jogging that annoying enough helped.
"AMELIA!" she shouted after realizing she was in the general area that Amelia was in; and that was when Marlene made a mistake. She looked up from the ground. the feeling of being upside down hit her at once, and she closed her eyes at once.
"Fecking hell-" she started. If she was going to fall, she told herself, she would have fallen already. And if she died, so what? She was dead at home.
Amelia wasn't.
