Molly laughed. "Yes. Ask anyone. At one point or another, every girl has done that to books or notes. There's magic in words, right? So maybe there's magic in that." She looked at him levelly. "There's also the hope that the object of our affection will pick up said item and realise that someone would really like to hold their hand or kiss them."
Not as subtle as she should be, but he was in her room, and they were discussing certain things about their lives. She didn't have to be terribly subtle right now. She started to stand, to get the family album with all of the baby pictures that she'd found, but she stopped when he held out his left hand. She touched the ring there gently, spinning it around his finger as she pulled his hand closer to her, holding it with both of hers. She pressed her left palm against his so that she could feel the metal at the base of her own finger and his pulse at her fingertips.
Her smile faded a little as she looked at their hands, and her heart ached for something she didn't know she could miss. "How can you miss something that hasn't happened yet?"
