Peter didn't hold the same home for changing the future - at least not the real future - as Dumbledore seemed to. According to the rest of the village his actions seemed to be written in stone. But he had already decided that he wanted to change things for himself here, as much as he could. It was the only way he could have any kind of life, even if it wasn't the one he would always have liked. And this was the last person he had expected to get any help from. It was an opportunity he simply had to take.
