Open Thread Who: Peter Pettigrew & Oliver Wood Where: On the beach When: Thursday morning What: I'm bored and Petey is sulking as usual
It had not been a good morning. After two hours in the boat flailing about in the wind with the net, he'd caught absolutely nothing except possibly a cold. Disgusted, he rowed back to shore and pulled the little boat back into its niche, leaving the net there in its tangled, dripping state. The books he had read (well, glanced at) about fishing put a lot of emphasis on taking care of your equipment, but Peter didn't see the point. Of any of it, really.
He took off his soaked coat and lay it out on a rock to dry, whereupon he immediately began to shiver. Are you a wizard or not? said a voice in the back of his mind. He sighed.
He hadn't done any but the most simple magic since his arrival. He was a little afraid of what he might do, after the last time. After talking to Ollivander he wasn't even sure he and his wand were as connected as they had once been. But a little warming charm couldn't hurt. He cast it, and sighed again, this time with relief as warmth soaked through his damp clothes and flooded over his skin.
Screw going to work, he thought, settling himself on the sand against a rock. It was still windy, but not nearly so bad in this little sheltered area. Without any fish to sell all he could do was stack boxes and try to avoid Emmeline. And he always had to keep looking over his shoulder. It felt safer, here.
It was Halloween. That was weird, he thought, as he plucked a strand of long grass from a patch beside him and wound it around his remaining fingers. By his own timeline, it had only just been Halloween less than a month ago. A Halloween he could never forget, now.
What was he doing here? he wondered. What could he possibly have to offer this place? His fishing skills certainly weren't anything desirable. Was he just waiting around for the inevitable day when Sirius felt well enough to come beat him to a pulp? It sometimes seemed like it.
He sat back, cast the warming charm again, and watched the waves breaking on the shore.
