Rowena had never been someone who was overly in touch with other peoples emotions, but she knew the look on Godrics face. She felt for her friend, and his unhappiness in the village, but there was little she knew that could fix it. He already knew that she would always be there for him, to her last breath, as would Salazar and Vogg and Godolfr, but he knew that was not what he was upset about. She frowned, her hand reaching to squeeze his shoulder gently.
“You talk of your menial days, but that’s all some people know. There are hardly many Godric the adventurer’s in all the universe, and even fewer here with their future laziness and dependency on flash and gadgets. That’s the only life they know. They’d be no happier than you are now if you’d dropped them in the middle of some bar fight in Constantinople.” She sighed again. “You may get your wish soon. The village is getting full, have you noticed? I think there may have to be another expansion in the cards, each house seems to be brimming with people when you walk the streets at night.” Of course, Rowena remembered when she first arrived to the village, and there were hardly more than forty people.
She went quiet for a moment though, as she thought about what he was saying. This was the farthest from the castle she’d ventured really, since their expedition had taken them underground those few months ago. There had been civilizations before them, though she’d hardly had time to look at the fallen artifacts, it was clear to her that they were old. Subconsciously, Rowena rubbed her hands on the skirt of her dress.
“How much of this expansion do you really think was Master Weasley’s intent?” She asked him quietly, an eyebrow raised, “Do not misunderstand me, this is not a critique of their capabilities, nor their determination, and had they tried to, I’m sure they could have easily built this landscape. But…” She shrugged again, staring into the fire.
“The…” she didn’t know what to call it. It wasn’t quite a world, but it was more than a village. “This place has already proven itself to be larger than we thought, and more detailed. When the village was more compact, I knew the woods well. I had traveled in it, it was the only quiet place for the many months I had been here, and Maker, you and Salazar seemed to run off to the woods weekly for your little competitions. While I hadn’t stopped to name every little rock, as I’m sure you had, I was confident, more confident than most in my familiarity with them. But… as we went it seemed to expand before us, a new part of the world that we’d previously never seen, and I could tell you that was not done by George Weasley’s hand. These rocks, these woods and mountains… they’re old. Older than days could count, probably. I think… it’s all… always been here, and we’ve only just started unlocking them and that… that is a mystery all on its own.” There was a passion in her voice, despite it’s slight confusion, because Rowena wanted to know more about… what came before. So that they could know what to expect, how to protect themselves. Maybe if they could figure out this mystery, than George could better control who came and went.
“There were people here before us. We already know that. And… I can only imagine that the last of them had been taken by those monsters and that…” Rowena had seen it, been horrified by it, and she still had trouble wrapping her brain around what it truly was. “That unspeakable thing. And we barely avoided it happening again. There must be more, more token of their civilization hiding somewhere. A chance to see what was…” Though Rowena shuttered to think of going in that place again, so much so that her heart beat quicker, and her breath sped into quick puffs of panic as her mind raced, she knew that she would be drawn to examine the pieces left behind, if ever they could find that entrance again, or a seal like it. “We’ve only proof of one… but there were… likely many, many more.”
