Bridget unlocked the door of number 25 and leaned against it with her shoulder to get it open. Her hands were full, though not as full as Greg's. There'd been quite the turnout for his surprise party. There was a moment when he had gone misty opening his gifts that all but destroyed Bee, in the best sense of the word. She might be a little biased, but she thought that he deserved every moment of this birthday party. She hadn't known him in her timeline. She was seven years older, technically. She'd left school before he even started. Bee didn't have prior knowledge of or prejudices against Greg. All she knew about him, she'd witnessed. He was kind and warm. He was brave and strong and caring. Loyal, and that smile. He lit up when he smiled.
She'd only had one drink tonight, and lots of food, so she wasn't drunk. She wasn't even tipsy. Bee had made a decision as everyone was bowling. After she put the mental period on her decision, she made herself stop thinking about it. Sometimes thinking got people into more trouble than acting, and she was going to act. She looked over her shoulder at Greg as she made her way into the dark house. She was wondering how he was feeling. He didn't seem pissed, which was good. She was serious about wanting him to experience certain things sober. She didn't know when she started looking at Greg and thinking about him in this way, but he was an attractive man, and he didn't know it. She smiled and turned to try to see where she was going, but she looked forward too late. She ran into the coffee table with her shin and swore. "Shit. Table. Jesus. I'm not drunk. I swear." She laughed at her own clumsiness and plopped onto the couch, dropping the gifts lightly onto the offending piece of furniture. She rubbed her shin gently. "That'll leave a mark."
Sprawling flat on her back, Bee reached towards the lamp on the side table to shine some light on the situation. Blinking in the sudden brightness, for even the dim bulb seemed like daylight after the near pitch blackness that was the room, she looked up at Greg and grinned before she pushed herself into a sitting position. She thumped the cushion next to her. "Did you have fun? You're not too upset that we surprised you?" She knew her eyes shone with mirth, and she caught her lower lip between her teeth as she waited for his answers.
