Bridget was turned around. The layout of the village was completely different, and she was a little more than tipsy. She'd spent most of the night attached to Door's hip, but she sneaked away, grabbing a bottle of wine, just before everyone left to go watch the fireworks. She'd had a good time, when she was dancing and letting the music flow through her, but when she stood still for too long, her brain started in on her. She was lost, and not just because she couldn't find the fucking path to her cottage. She was supposed to be in number 25, but she hadn't seen a damn house so far. She wasn't looking that hard or walking that fast, but still. All she saw were trees and green spaces.
Bee sat heavily on a nearby bench, clanking her bottle against the arm and silently thanking the universe for it being half full. It didn't slosh onto her dress. The dress that was supposed to make men drool, to turn heads, and help her remember the vivacious person she really was. She still left on her own. "Your own damn fault," she slurred at herself as she removed her shoes. Her brogue was thick, but she liked the sound of it in her ears. "Should have just asked, you silly girl, instead of waiting. Nice guys like that have a small window of availability." She stood and quickly stepped on the grass. It was cool against her bare feet, and she felt a lazy, drunken smile spread across her face. She wiggled her toes, enjoying the tickling sensation. She carefully set the bottle on the bench before she spread her arms wide and started to spin. She spun until she was afraid of being sick. She plopped to the ground and lay back before she opened her eyes to watch the night sky spin above her.
As the world righted, she began to hum. A new song sounded in her head, and she wasn't sure how she felt about it. Normally, in quiet moments like this, moments where she was uncertain and lost, she would hum a song of unknown origin. A song that got her into trouble recently. That song was still there in idle moments, but not completely. She had fought it, and a new song had taken it's place. She'd heard it on the wireless, and it stuck with her. It made her think of home, of different possibilities, of how her fear kept getting in her way. It made her think of how lonely she was. Even when she was with people, she felt alone. She'd felt alone since she hugged her parents and brothers goodbye to go hide. She was good at pretending, though. "So when I need you can I send you a sign? I'll burn a candle and turn off the lights. I'll pick a star and watch you shine," she sang aloud, a tear streaming down her cheek. I should never drink wine, she thought. "My wine!" Bee sat up, her head swam, and she said, "Fuck it," before laying down again. She started the song over from the beginning, singing it with feeling. No matter how drunk she was, she would always sing on key. She didn't hear the person approach her.
