Since Greg was sitting and listening to everything so hard, he heard the little raspy sounds of footsteps coming near him. Another thing about the village, then, that he didn't have back home: he didn't so much as tense up. Whoever was coming, even if they weren't a friend they still weren't gonna be anyone all that bad. Sure enough, it was a real pretty little slip of a girl who came walking out almost of top of him.
Greg got to his feet fast, though he didn't go near her since, big as he was, sometimes people took him for being threatening when he wasn't meaning to be. He just flashed a crooked, awkward smile that faded again fast. "Sorry," he said fast. "Didn't think anyone ever come down this way. Everybody seems to like that big spot over where they had the party the other day, and..." He stopped himself, uncertain. "Um. I can go?"
