The moment she spotted her maman, her eyes filled all over again, and she managed a watery smile. "Maman - look at you, you're younger than me," she managed, her voice breaking. As soon as she was up the porch steps, she gave her a hug in return, awkward as it was, before letting her mother usher them inside.
