When Helga had initially arrived in Fourteen Shades, her first thought had been with her family - were they safe? Did they need her? Would they miss her? Reassured on all these counts, she was able to turn her attention to the situation at hand which, it turned out, was highly unusual and rather exciting. Helga had never been bored with her life, but nothing like this had ever happened to her before (at least, in her recollection) and she wanted to take full advantage of it. Easily the best news she had heard since she had come here was that her best friend Rowena was also present, albeit an older version than the Rowena she was friends with. Helga did not take much urging to be persuaded to leave her - somewhat curious - house and venture out to visit her friend.
Helga's house was number twenty, and Rowena's, she had been told, was seventeen. Helga did not know if it would be a few doors down, or opposite, or both, but she did know it had to be near. When she emerged, she looked all around her. There was a number on the house opposite. Helga walked forwards a few steps until she saw the number. Twenty-one. She turned back in the direction of her own house and looked at the number of the one next to it. Eighteen. Opposite that: nineteen. Helga's breath caught in her throat as she realised that Rowena's must be the house next door to that one. She hurried along the street until she came upon it. Seventeen. That was it. With a rush of energy, Helga sprang forward and knocked on the door.
"Rowena!" she called, breathlessly and somewhat needlessly - but she was excited. "It is I, Helga."
