Petunia and Lily were close when they were younger. No one messed with Lily if Petunia was there, because Petunia would shout at them and throw rocks and make sure they regretted their decision. That was her baby sister, thank you very much. It was the magic that made them into what they were. Not because of Lily. Because she couldn't handle the idea that she was suddenly second best. She was suddenly not the one that people were as interested it. It just kept compounding itself as time went on. She couldn't go with Lily to magic school, she wasn't the prettiest or the smartest out of the two of them. She was runner up. She would always be runner up. That was why the idea of her being married one day was confusing, only he was apparently the unpleasant sort. Maybe that was another thing. Lily could have a good husband and she couldn't. She was sure whoever he was, he'd have picked Lily over her if he'd seen her first. That was the root of it all. Lily was always better. At least, that's how it seemed.
She tensed for a moment at the start of the use of 'muggle'. She still didn't like it. Even if there was no reason. People said it with such [...] unpleasant tones. Muggle. She preferred non-magical. "I'm sure I could give them a rough time. Only then I'd probably be in danger." Her nose wrinkled slightly. "That's what gossip is for. The right bit of knowledge in the right hands is more than enough to ruin a person who would otherwise be the top of the crowd." She shrugged slightly. "Oh. Um."
But then he'd continued. Petunia glanced down at the table at the mention of his death. She didn't like it. She didn't like to think about it and she'd dealt with it, by cooking and baking. That was the only way she knew how without crying. "I'm sure if the higher classes in non-magical families thought they could get away with killing off poorer families, they might. You don't have to have magic to be a monster. It just gives you more power." She drew patterns on the table, eyes resting for a moment on her sandwich. "Iced tea's fine."
