Maybe they didn't really have a choice, no, but Roger still liked to think that, somehow or another, he and Padma were meant to be together, and the magic had conspired to see that through.
He was too young to have a legacy, of course, and maybe he shouldn't have mentioned it at all, but it seemed to be a day for baring feelings, unwanted ones or otherwise.
