It irked Salazar that she was being blamed for something she did it her future, almost as much as it irked him to be blamed for putting a basilisk into Hogwarts. He could hardly be held accountable for it, because he came from a point in his life before he even met the other Founders. The same was true for Walburga, in his opinion.
