Roger took Padma's interruption as his cue to step back from Devi, just in case, and he took a seat on his own at the nearby sofa. "She has a point," Roger added, backing up Padma's words, even if Devi had complained about them. "Your grandmother was quite lovely, in her younger years." It occurred to him, then, that by Devi's time her grandmother, his mother, might well have passed on. He could remember Alicia's surprise when she'd heard of his father's passing. Whichever the answer, Roger wasn't certain he wanted to know- he'd learned enough of his future, already.
Oh, this was all so strange. He didn't want to be nervous, but Roger knew that he now had to measure up against Devi's own memories of him- and he worried that he might somehow be found lacking. There were certain things that they probably shouldn't discuss, and it seemed that compliments were right out as well, so he faltered, uncertain where to go from there. "Is there- anything you'd like to talk about?" Maybe offering her the reins was a better option.
