There's one thing, baby, that I don't understand Who: National Security (absolutecontrol) What: Coming back as if nothing has happened. Where: NYC When: Monday Warnings: Messing with a human's brain.
Everything in his office is exactly as he's left it. Nobody seems to be aware that Jamie Sheppard hasn't shown up for work since last Monday. He looks a bit different, kind of cheerful which is unusual for him. Sort of relaxed and well-rested which is also unusual. But what raises more than just a few eyebrows is the fact that he seems to be having breakfast in his office. At his desk, a sweating cup containing some kind of cold beverage sitting dangerously close to a stack of important files, a sandwich right next to the keyboard. For someone who's thrown hissy fits over a crumb - not crumbs, one crumb - this kind of behaviour is rather... disconcerting? Reassuring? Maybe Sheppard is a normal human being after all? Well, nobody feels like asking questions, so nobody comments on it.
Somewhere in Texas, a young woman is found lying unconscious on the side of a road. When she opens her eyes, she does not react to the doctor's questions, does not react to touch, sound or smell, just stares blankly without seeing what's going on around her. She doesn't know where she is or who she is anymore. Her family sets her up in a nursing home. For the rest of her life, she will think that she's wandering through endless corridors lined with locked doors.
She used to be Maggie Daniels. Now, she's Josef K.
National Security calls her storage unit S21-0910-P. He's made her his secret keeper, filling her brain with all the facts and events that have no place in the greater scheme of things. They're personal, they're his. And when she dies, he will find someone new. For now, she's the favourite.
Drawing a god or goddesses attention never ends well for a mortal soul.
