All the creatures who lived in the soil had departed, escaped to greener pastures, as far away from the ancient being as they could. Everything was silent now. No soft rustling of loose earth, no nothing.
Silence. Stillness.
It made everything infinitely worse. Memory presented her with the faint sound of a voice, soothing, calming, familiar, comforting - but she found no comfort in it. Only mockery.
'Silly woman,' it seemed to say, 'silly queen. Did you really believe you could have all you lost in that gamble back?'
Yes, Rhea had believed she could. It had been there in front of her. She had touched it and held it. It was still there. He was there. She thought she'd lost him forever but he'd come back.
Nothing was impossible anymore.
Nothing.
Listening to her heartbeat, she silently recited age-old prayers that used to fall from their subjects' lips. Prayers to the ruler of their paradise.
Prayers to her brother, lover, husband.
