At the mines things were simple. You worked until your back broke and then you worked some more. It was a hard place ruled by an unforgiving god that demanded payment for each piece of him they took from the Earth. No, Coal was not kind but he was fair. He worked beside the mortals that had no place in the black pits that were his home. The crews never noticed the god amongst their midst though when he was around they didn’t feel fatigued and dug into the underground’s rocky veins with feverish gusto.
There was no time in the mine and so eventually when shift change came around the miners and their god stepped blinking into the sunlight. The mortals dispersed. Coal on the other hand had this funny feeling in the back of his skull.
…He knew this headache. He knew this headache very well.
