We'll do it all - everything, on our own.
Who: Toby Sloan (lucid_enigma), OPEN to other wandering Carnies if they wish.
What: Christmas morning wanderings.
Where: Not far from the carnival.
When: Early Christmas morning.
Warnings: None.
Spending Christmas alone used to feel so strange. He had everything he could possibly ever want, and then in the blink of an eye he had absolutely nothing. The cold bit down harder, but the numbing effects cold was usually accompanied by was nowhere to be seen.
In the cacophony of people relishing in Christmas racket, drinking and cheering, giving each other well-wishes and ruffling their children's hair, the silence was even more noticeable.
Toby did his part before he left the compound. He gave Dorian a couple of bottlecaps, bought Jack a bottle of bourbon, offered Maarten a book and, since he couldn't seem to find Stan, left his present with the boss, whom Toby got a snowglobe for.
He would have gotten something for the Alcotts but he didn't want to get shot, nor was he willing to risk lingering around the girls who seemed to like to do things that made him uncomfortable.
Watching his breath dissipate from mist to the cool air abundant around him, occasionally he glanced up and around at the buildings casting looming shadows over him. They seemed lonely too. Cold and lonely - perhaps that was the way Christmas was intended to be.
