There had been a few days where James just hadn't cared. Everythinghad just been, well, eh. Now he was back to his normal hyper self. He was currently walking down the side walk, his head bowed, and toying with a finger puzzle. His wandering would hopefully take him to a shop that had chocolates for him to buy.

Okay, so the chocolates were for him, kind of. He was planning on eating quite a bit of the chocolates, but he honestly did plan on getting some for other people. Lily, his mum, Siri, Astrid, and his friends. Except his friends were most likely going to just get prank chocolates since he didn't want to be too mushy.

The puzzle was solved and he sighed as he clapped his hands together. What once was a puzzle erupted in a cloud of glitter and he flicked his fingers. Glitter fell to the ground in a shower of Gryffindor colours. He was so freaking bored now that he was back to feeling like himself. Maybe he should go pester one of the Pads after he finished his chocolate trip? He stood there thinking and just kind of zoned out.

Maybe his mum would like flowers?

Lily felt good, there was no other way to describe it. It was sort of like that one time the other girls in the dorm managed to get her tipsy after the O.W.Ls in fifth year. Luckily she hadn't had any classes the next morning, for that was the day Lily Evans learned that she couldn't handle alcohol and was sick for the rest of the day.

That said, her day had been going pretty well so far. She liked being outside, and she enjoyed perusing the little shops. It had only occurred to her a few days previously that she should pick out things for the other version of her son here, as a way to extend a branch of acceptance. Oh! She needed to grab something for Dudley, as well. This list was getting out of hand.

Leaving one of the shops with her head down, Lily pulled out her running list of Valentine's presents she needed to purchase when she found herself smacking into someone taller than she was; her list flying in every direction.

"Oh, great," she muttered to herself, backing up instantly. "I am so sorry, are you alright?" Finally glancing up, Lily was face-to-face with none other than James Potter.

"Hi-hello."

One second he was standing there, lost in thought, and the next he was stumbling slightly. He managed to catch himself before he fell over or something. Merlin, that would have been embarrassing.

The voice apologizing was familiar and he glanced down. Sure enough, there was Lily Evans. James' lips quirked slightly to the side before he gave her a slight shrug. "Alright, you didn't damage me."

So many cheesy lines came to mind, but he kept them all inside. He was being slightly careful since talking to this Lily appeared to be like walking through a muggle minefield. He never knew what weird thing was going to set her off.

"Hi-hello," he managed to say in a non mocking tone. His lips did curl up into a slight smirk before he bent down to pick up her list. Soon enough he was standing back up and offering the list to her.

"Buying presents for everyone, Evans?"

Lily smiled just slightly; an attempt at silently saying she wouldn't explode at him. "Well, good. I don't think anyone would be too happy with me if I did."

She had been looking for the slip of paper as James greeted her, her eyes meeting his for a brief moment as he repeated her own words. It didn't come across as mocking in the slightest, and she felt too at peace to let it bother her if he meant it that way. "What're you...?" she began to question as he leaned down.

When he straightened and held the list to her, her smile grew and she reached out, her fingers grazing the palm of his hand for a moment. "Thank you." The words were sincere and without any trace of sarcasm, much to her delight. So they could be nice to one another. That was good.

"Trying to, Potter," she retorted, her voice still gentle. "I think I managed to grab something for all the versions of Harry. I still have Petunia's son and Sirius.

"Are you shopping as well?"

His lips quirked at her remark. Quite a few people would probably be upset if he did get honestly injured. Thankfully the only way Lily could injure him is if she flat out tried. He was betting on the fact she didn't want to hurt him, at least not right now.

James' eyes widened slightly in surprise when her fingers grazed over the palm of his hand. The words got stuck in his mouth as he tried to say 'your welcome' so he settled on clearing his throat awkwardly.

"Uh, yeah. Wanted to get people some things and get my mum flowers. Figured I couldn't really get my friends chocolate so wanted to find something else? Um, those weird hearts with sayings on them? I spotted some earlier so I might just do that." He was rambling, Merlin, he knew he was rambling. He reached back and scratched the back of his head as he tried to figure out a smooth way to fix this awkward.

"Think you can help me pick out something for my mom?" There, smooth.

"Conversation hearts?" She supplied helpfully, refusing to look him in the face. Thankfully, the rambling soon ended and Lily was able to clear her own throat and focus on him again. It was clear that she had caught him off guard, and her face lit like a tomato as he had struggled for words. Was it possible to feel even more awkward in this situation? Probably not.

"Um." Well, that was charming. She didn't know his mother at all and she wasn't sure if she would be much of a help. What if he hated what she liked? Why was she even worried about that anyway? "Sure, okay. I can do that."

Lily led the way to the path of shops that held some of the nicer items she found before turning slightly to ask, "Did you have anything in particular in mind?"

"Yeah, those! Conversation hearts."

A real smile appeared on his face when she said she would help him out. Brill! Now James just had to figure out how to watch his mouth so he didn't say anything stupid to make her angry again.

Soon enough they were walking down the path and he did his best not to keep casting glances at her. The last time they had talked they had pretty much bickered. He wasn't sure why they had been bickering, but it was kind of just what they did. "I thought flowers, but that is kind of cliche? Right? I mean people normally get flowers for Valentine's Day. What would you want?" He glanced at her and raised an eyebrow, not really thinking about what he just asked.

"They're fun," Lily offered. "I like conversation hearts."

It was nice when he smiled, Lily decided. The real ones, at least, because they didn't have the underlying arrogance that his smirks did. "You have a..." Lily trailed off, looking fixedly at the pavement in front of her. "Nice smile." Right, now to ignore the fact that she said that.

"I'd say classic rather than cliche. What's her favorite kind?" She almost didn't catch his question, but as soon as she did her face turned a brighter shade of red. "Me? I- I mean, I think I'd like something that's more of an experience than something physical. Gifts can fade, but memories stay with us. But if you mean an actual gift, I do like books of poetry. Emerson and Whitman."

The remark about his smile made him falter in his steps. James played it off by just clasping his hands behind his back and spinning around so he could walk backwards for a bit. His own cheeks were a bit red, but he wasn't going to comment on the compliment. That was awkward and he had no idea what to say. Wait, no, that would be rude! He bit his lower lip slightly before just saying, "Thanks."

After a moment he went back to walking like a normal person. "She tends to like the bright flowers. I mean ones that have a lot of colour. Does that count?"

A serious look fell over his face as she talked about memories. That made sense. He had lots of memories of his friends and he liked those more then some tiny trinket. A snort of laughter escaped him as she said she liked books of poetry. "I'm surprised you weren't a Ravenclaw with your love of books," he teased before he could stop himself.

Lily nodded as he told her about the flowers. "Why don't you make her a bouquet yourself? Pick out the ones that are the most colourful and then I'll help you arrange them so they look great? I'm sure your mum would love something like that. It's classic, heartfelt and personalized to her." She began to guide them up toward the flower shop, stopping occasionally. "Unless you think she'd want sonethig else to start with."

Shrugging at his assessment, she smiled again. "I almost was. The hat couldn't decide between Ravenclaw and Gryddindor." Her first true experience in the wizarding world was her sorting and it was still her favorite thing. "Said I had the thirst for knowledge but a tenacity that was stronger."
