Who: Lily Snape and Open
What: Prefect Rounds
When: August 27, 2012
Where: Hogwarts School
Why: Becuase Lily is taking duties rather seriously and it's a good time to try and clear her head.

Hogwarts. In the past the name of the school she so dearly loved had been a source of comfort, of joy. It had been a place of learning, of growing, not just for her. A place where they were secure, or so it seemed. Admittedly their safety had been breeched on several occasions during her schooling and teaching tenure but the safety of those inside had always been paramount. The walls around her now felt much the same, but in her head, Lily didn't entirely know, there was something off.

Maybe it was the fact that she was 38 and back as a student. Maybe it was that there was a scientist in her chambers, Severus' chambers depending on which world you were looking at, maybe it was the fact that she hadn't been a prefect since sixth year and while she was used to patrols - you did them as a professor - this was different. Or maybe it was the simple fact that she was worried. Very worried. The new arrival of Lestrange and the fact that her family here was now going to be thrown into a certain state of emotional turmoil didn't sit well. IT hadn't sat well during the war when she'd agreed to play secret keeper, it hadn't sat well during the leadup to the second war. She'd learned to trust her gut. And this was going to be a battle, she knew it. Whatever it was she'd be there. She made a note to write tomorrow. See what was needed, if they even wanted anything. If she could do anything....

Some of Lily's best times had been here, within the walls of the school. The walls held a million and one stories and not all of them were good. Whatever the scientists had been hoping for when they brought them here... she could only imagine what was coming next. Would it be peace or war? Would they be thrown back into the school's past or its future? Were they safe? Nothing was assured here. Everything was out of their control. Here, the compound. Right now she just wanted to put her fist through Lestrange's head. For hurting her family! But that right belonged to James and Remus, Lily and Sirius. There were very few people that Lily ever wanted to hurt with extreme prejudice, but all of them were Death Eaters.

Taking a breath she tried to calm herself. Patrol used to be a point when she could just clear her head. Except when she wound up running directly into a prank. She was hoping for none of that tonight. Yes she was taking these duties seriously, but it was mostly becuase it was a strucure, and right now, it was something she was trying to force herself into. This place was so unpredictable.

Thus far Lily had considered herself lucky. She had found no one out after curfew. With six Siriuses and nearly as many Jameses running around she'd been almost certain that there would be hijinx afoot. But thus far there had been nothing.

While she would normally be thankful for little miracles, she knew that such things generally marked the moment that things fell apart. She'd experienced it too many times in the past. Generally things were worse when you did that too.

Lily was musing on this when she thought she saw something moving up ahead. In the dim light of the hallway, she approached cautiously. Pulling out her wand she cast a spell. "Lumos." Before seeing an all too familiar outline. She really had thought too soon. Was he serious? What was he doing?! "Let me guess," she said somewhat flatly. "You got lost on your way to the kitchens? And thought that this was the way downstairs?" Sarcasm worked well.

James grinned broadly and turned around, "Lily! Actually, just needed to use the loo here." He bit his lower lip and kept grinning.

"Out on patrol then?" It was good to see her, even if he was about to get his arse chewed out over curfew.

And there was the smile. It was a smile that she'd learned to trust when they'd had one another's back, but that had been outside of Hogwarts. With James it was a matter of what he was doing, how he looked and where he was. And that smile within the walls of Hogwarts really meant nothing but trouble. "And you came out of the tower all the way to the third floor just for that?" She was skeptical and rightfully so. She didn't trust him for a minute.

"I've been made prefect again," she said with a tilt of her head, leaning against the wall. She canceled the spell and crossed her arms. "So yes. Patrols come with the territory. Though I don't happen to remember a rule that states Quidditch Captains can walk about anywhere they please at any time." Despite the chastisement, there was a bit of amusement in her face. James Potter was never going to change. And if nothing else - if only momentarily - she was able to get her mind off the LEstrange situation.

He leaned against the bathroom door, "Everyone knows the best toilets are on the third floor." James shrugged.

"So you have. Well there ought to be one! What if there was a Quidditch emergency in the middle of the night? What would we do then?" He nodded, "We'd be in a right mess, is what."

He wasn't going to get away with this so easily, so he figured he'd look his fill while he could. She wasn't quite the Lily he'd left behind, a little younger, carried herself a bit different than he'd grown accustomed to, but still the Snape he'd prefer at his back. James realized he still hadn't told her about Snape, and fervently hoped it wasn't about to become a topic of discussion.

Lily rolled her eye He'd say anything. But she knew that he knew that she wasn't buying it. She knew better. She knew him better.

"Then we'd wait until morning to handle it." she said, her hand resting on her hip. "There is nothing about anything you just said that couldn't wait till morning," she said poking at him verbally. "I swear sometimes I wonder if Quidditch is all you have on the brain, James."

The conversation was one that mirrored one from their sixth year. Almost exactly. It would have been eerie if it weren't so amusing. "Alright, so out with it. Are you just out on a stroll because you got bored or did I catch you in the process of a prank?" Her eyes moved over his form looking for any contraband.

He couldn't help it, she's walked right into nearly exactly the conversation they had in Sixth, "Oh, love, I wouldn't say Quidditch is all I've got on the brain." James couldn't resist giving her his best smirk, even if he knew all that reached his eyes was the laugh. Truthfully, he wasn't serious about Quidditch emergencies, so he just let the rest of it lie.

"On a stroll to the loo, like I said," he shrugged, "Things to think, didn't want to fill up the whole dorm with them, you know?" He wasn't sure he really wanted to discuss Lestrange, or the heavy thing that had settled between his shoulders since he heard the man had arrived. It didn't really matter if it was "his" Lestrange, that there was one at all was bad enough.

He saw her looking him over, "Like what you see, Lils?" He raised his hands a bit, pushing off the door to do a slow turn for her. "Not a hair out of place, if I do say so myself."

Oh that smirk. If this was sixth year there would be a dozen girls trying to get into his pants because of it. As much as she liked to think she was immune to such things, she knew herself too well. Back in Seventh, when he'd finally shown some maturity, that was different but now? She ignored the quidditch comment and shook her head. "Such a bloke..." she murmured before rolling her eyes, clearly amused.

She had had a biting remark on the tip of her tongue until he mentioned having a lot to think about. Her body languange went from someone about to retort to someone backing down. She couldn't argue that. Hell that was part of why she'd taken this route for patrol as well... longer way around more time to think. "Everything alright?" She was genuinely concerned. "Can't say I didn't have the same idea... this particular flip just seems to be bringing so much to the forefront. Hogwarts," she sighed. "It can never be simple, can it?"

Lily's eyes widened slightly as she watched him. Had he really just said that? She chuckled, holding it down, covering her mouth and shaking her head. "Still using that same charm to keep it all together then? Better than hair gel is what I think you used to say?"

James shrugged, "Regular life was anything but simple, I'm not sure if I'd bothered to imagine this particular situation that I'd assume it would be any easier. But, you know, Hogwarts was always a study in contradictions."

He leaned against the door again, "Oh, you know, the Lestrange thing. Everyone's in a snit because he's arrived, and I can't help but be too. So, I thought a walk might clear my head."

"You know me, all charm, a dash of class, the gel never did work anyway. Sirius tried to accuse me of stealing Snape's style the one time I tried to use gel," he pushed his glasses back up his nose and smiled slightly. It was getting easier to talk about Severus, so he should get on actually talking to Lily about him soon he wagered.
