Nothing was going according to plan. In fact, everything had gone so terribly unaccording to plan since her arrival on the Compound that Theo had long since discarded it. She was flying by the seat of her pants, trying in vain to avoid the obstacles inexplicably being set in her path by the scientists. And she wasn’t doing a very good job at it, either. She wasn’t at all sure why they seemed to have such an invested interest in seeing her reconciliation with V. She doubted it was out of compassion, though.

Still, in spite of the means to the end, nearly every idiotic thing they’d done so far had served to prompt a serious, much-needed moment. Though the letters and the video and the trip back in time had made her livid, it had also forced her to have that conversation with V, one that both further complicated things but also made them significantly more understandable. They could move forward now, instead of just treading water.

It was strange to be in her position, though, where it was V who was holding back and saying that he couldn’t manage more than friends. She was okay with it, to be sure, but it was still odd. She couldn’t help but reflect on the journey she’d taken from her 19th birthday onward. Still, she was willing to accept that bit of awkwardness if it meant keeping V close. They’d figure it out. They always did.

There had been a little awkwardness at the start of their movie marathon, but that was understandable given their recent conversation. By the second episode, they were laughing and poking at each other, and by the third, they’d curled up against each other as usual. They missed four and five entirely, suddenly unable to avoid each other, and she fell asleep curled up against him during the start of the sixth.

Some time later (as she was no longer able to follow the track of the continuing show as it flashed before them), she blinked her eyes away, yawning. She shifted a bit, a few little cracks sounding as her joints unstiffened, but she didn’t move much beyond that, trying to collect her thoughts on the situation, but overwhelmed by the warm feeling that made her feel so comfortable.

"I really do," V said, laughing. "I want you in mah belly." He lifted a hand to wipe at his nose, as if she'd slobbered all over it, even though she hadn't. "I must've caught the cannibalism bug."

It was so much easier to joke about the things from when they were younger when he was in much the same state of mind. When it didn't just remind him of what they'd been, and make him sad. But he'd had reasons for saying he didn't want to just fall back into that, too, and as his heart swelled a little, he felt that he ought to give a voice to them.

"Sounds good to me," he said. "But I do still love you, you know. In a non-serious, non-planning, mostly best friend kind of way, but also in a way that means I'm never going to be good at just being your friend. Think you can handle that?"

“It’s a carryover from the zombie apocalypse, to be sure,” she responded, grinning. “Which means you’ve probably passed the virus to me. So, that’s appreciated. Ass.” She poked his side gently.

It really was easier then, but that didn’t mean it couldn’t be easy now. Everything was out on the table, the words from before having a sort of freeing effect on Theo, who usually ran from serious moments as quickly as she could. They’d never been her forte, but she was starting to see their merit.

She ducked her head bashfully, her heart racing a bit as he spoke. But it wasn’t in panic like last time. It was an overwhelming thought, but she was forcing herself to listen to him and to hear the meaning of the words, rather than thinking of everything that could go wrong. They’d already addressed that, after all. “I know,” she responded, smiling. “I like that.” She looked at him again. “I think… well, I think I feel the same way. But I don’t want to just say it now, not when it could be misconstrued as just being a response. I want to wait till I can’t keep it in anymore. Is that okay?”

"We'll have to find someone to bash both our heads in," V said musingly. "I bet Janie would be happy to oblige."

And it was out there. He didn't want to pretend like her nineteenth birthday hadn't happened; he didn't want it to quietly fester under the surface, especially after they'd actually managed to put everything out in the open. He let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding when she spoke, though, and nodded. "Yeah. I can handle that."

Which he could. Even on her birthday, he hadn't been expecting her to say it back, hadn't expected to jump into anything serious immediately. He'd just wanted to say it. It had now been said, and accepted for what it was, so he was alright. "I expect that'll be when you've gone completely zombified and eating my brains, yeah?"

“That can be her prize for the v-card comment. Better and far more fulfilling than a trophy, definitely,” Theo responded, laughter in her voice.

It really did feel amazingly relieving to have everything out the way that it was. They were still piecing it all together, of course, but anything was better than what they’d had before. “Good,” she responded.

This was such a rational conversation in comparison to the first. At his words, her eyes grew wide and her expression twisted to feigned shock. “Oh no, it’s happening. Zombie virus… taking over. Craving... human brains,” she said in choked words, her body twitching and shaking to go along with it. “Save yourself!”

V burst out laughing, genuinely amused by the V-card joke for the first time since he'd regained his full senses. "She really does deserve a prize for that one," he said. "I expect you're not going to let Daddy V live that one down, now."

Which was just fine by him, since the negative emotions associated with the joke were quickly fading away. This was all he wanted, really: to be them, to be simple, but to have her understand how he felt. Now they were there, and there wasn't anything for him to worry about at the moment.

He raised his eyebrows at her, unable to hold back his amusement at her zombie imitation. "Shit, I fell asleep next to a zombie without my shotgun," he said. "By most movie standards, I'm pretty sure that means I'm gonna die."

“Oh, Daddy V will hear it constantly for the rest of his life, to be sure,” she responded, grinning. “I am just so fucking proud of her for it that I can barely stand it. How dare she be so clever, that little bitch.”

Theo was equally glad to have shed the awkward connotations of the jokes. That was the purpose for the mockery and ice cream tradition, after all. It was getting back to normal and making jokes of awkward things, but that was all just a bandaid over the wound. Now they’d really started the healing process that would bring them closer together.

She paused mid-zombie transformation to grin. “Of course, by movie standards, you’re pretty well fucked anyway. Exchange of bodily fluids, you know,” she responded. “We’ll be zombies together.”

"We'll have to outdo her somehow," V said. "Daddy V doesn't like being out-clevered." Which was not a word, but he didn't care, at all. He was so far beyond caring about sensible or serious things that it wasn't even funny. Except that everything was, in fact, funny.

He chuckled, and took that as a cue to lean in for a kiss to seal his fate. "There, now I'm absolutely, positively, definitely fucked," he said when he'd pulled away, amused by the multiple meanings of that sentence, and how each of them was completely true. Then he thought of something else, and wrinkled his nose. "You know who's going to be completely insufferable when they find out about the zombie virus transmission, though? Boy-you and girl-me."
