V's emotional state had been messed with quite a few times now since being in the compound, but this was by far the worst. He had been aged down to sixteen, when he'd been dating Theo, which in retrospect basically meant he'd gotten back together with her, albeit unwillingly. And it had been awesome, of course; they'd been awesome together at that age. But now, at nineteen-- or twenty, he still wasn't entirely sure-- what it meant was that he'd taken enormous steps backward in getting over her. He felt like they had gotten back together, like they were still back together. It didn't help that she wanted to keep up the jokes that had come up while they were together, which was normal for them, but just too much for him to handle at the moment.
He'd been so determined to break this cycle, to be done. To be her best friend, and nothing else. And he'd been succeeding, for the most part, except when the scientists had forced their relationship back out into the open again.
More than anything, he just wanted his emotions to be all his again. Wanted the scientists out of his head, wanted their control over him to go away. There wasn't anything to make this place worth all the trouble, not for him; for Theo, she had her parents, and V understood why that would make her want to stay. But he didn't have his real parents, or his siblings, or his job, nothing to tie him here. Which would all be fine, really, if the reasons why he didn't want to be here would stop piling up. He could handle being away from his family, and he could handle not working. But it gave him nothing else to concentrate on aside from what was going on with the scientists, with Theo, and all the time and effort he'd spent on clearing his head before coming here had not been nearly enough to handle any of this.
He really, really wanted to go home. To be back in Egypt, with the warm sun and the dark tombs and the prank feud with his companions, where his biggest worries were sunburn and having to shake out his shoes in case scorpions had crawled into them in the night. Where he had been in the middle of unlocking the secrets of an ancient man's belongings, a man whose skull had inadvertently come here with him. The skull was in a box now, a Christmas gift from Celeste, but it didn't really belong here any more than Victorien did.
Merlina, he needed to get his head together. He would have gotten up and gone to the gym or something, but Fleur had said she would come over. She was sort of both his mum and his papa at the same time and yet not really quite either of them, but it was close enough; he wanted to see her nonetheless.
