Who: VSWAP & FleurBDH
What: alternate mother-son time.
When: Sunday, after this
Where: V's unit, Epsilon Block
Warnings: emotions. :|

V's emotional state had been messed with quite a few times now since being in the compound, but this was by far the worst. He had been aged down to sixteen, when he'd been dating Theo, which in retrospect basically meant he'd gotten back together with her, albeit unwillingly. And it had been awesome, of course; they'd been awesome together at that age. But now, at nineteen-- or twenty, he still wasn't entirely sure-- what it meant was that he'd taken enormous steps backward in getting over her. He felt like they had gotten back together, like they were still back together. It didn't help that she wanted to keep up the jokes that had come up while they were together, which was normal for them, but just too much for him to handle at the moment.

He'd been so determined to break this cycle, to be done. To be her best friend, and nothing else. And he'd been succeeding, for the most part, except when the scientists had forced their relationship back out into the open again.

More than anything, he just wanted his emotions to be all his again. Wanted the scientists out of his head, wanted their control over him to go away. There wasn't anything to make this place worth all the trouble, not for him; for Theo, she had her parents, and V understood why that would make her want to stay. But he didn't have his real parents, or his siblings, or his job, nothing to tie him here. Which would all be fine, really, if the reasons why he didn't want to be here would stop piling up. He could handle being away from his family, and he could handle not working. But it gave him nothing else to concentrate on aside from what was going on with the scientists, with Theo, and all the time and effort he'd spent on clearing his head before coming here had not been nearly enough to handle any of this.

He really, really wanted to go home. To be back in Egypt, with the warm sun and the dark tombs and the prank feud with his companions, where his biggest worries were sunburn and having to shake out his shoes in case scorpions had crawled into them in the night. Where he had been in the middle of unlocking the secrets of an ancient man's belongings, a man whose skull had inadvertently come here with him. The skull was in a box now, a Christmas gift from Celeste, but it didn't really belong here any more than Victorien did.

Merlina, he needed to get his head together. He would have gotten up and gone to the gym or something, but Fleur had said she would come over. She was sort of both his mum and his papa at the same time and yet not really quite either of them, but it was close enough; he wanted to see her nonetheless.

It hadn't taken long for Fleur to reach Victorien's room, since she'd been in her own not far from his. Even knowing it wouldn't take long, though, she'd still hurried. Swapped genders or not, he was still hers, and he needed her in a way her own version of him hadn't since she'd been brought here. It felt nice to be needed, it was one of her favorite things about being a mother. Back home, she'd prepared herself for the fact that she wouldn't be needed one day- in fact that she shouldn't raise her children to need her, but to be self-sufficient. She just hadn't thought that day would come so suddenly and so these little snippets, with Mini as well as with this version of Victoire, were all the more precious to her. Especially since her own Victoire had rarely ever seemed to actually need her, independent almost from the word go.

Arriving at his door, she double-checked the nameplate before knocking, her other hand moving to the bag of candies in her pocket. She supposed it had been silly of her to ask if he liked sweets, but who knew what differences there would be in a world where everyone was a different gender. Maybe the male version of her had treated his kids with vegetables instead.

At the sound of the knock, V set down his journal and got to his feet, moving over to open the door. It was a good thing he'd already seen her before, so he could skip past the confusing you're-my-dad-but-not-quite feeling fairly quickly and move on to being glad to see her, which he really, really was. He moved to hug her, vaguely amused that she was so much shorter than him.

"Hi, Maman," he said, which was the name that felt the most natural on his tongue. She felt like a mother, even if he was used to her being his dad. Finally, he stepped back, and gestured her in. "Vous allez bien?"

Stretching up onto her tip-toes, Fleur wrapped her arms around his shoulders as soon as he made a move to hug her, cradling the back of his head in one of her hands as she squeezed him. It was a bit awkward with the height difference, but she was used to hugging Bill, who was taller than she was though not by the same margin.

"'Ello, Victorien," she murmured, the smile on her face evident in her tone. She was glad he'd accepted her as enough of a part of his family to call her maman. And to call her when he needed someone. She let him dictate how long he needed to hug to go on, giving him one last squeeze before they parted and she entered his room. She waited for him before she made any move to sit or do anything other than stand near the door, not wanting to intrude or be rude. "I am better since changing back," she answered in only slightly accented English. Speaking it was much easier for her than writing, probably because that was what she was now used to at home. "But it is not important, what is important is 'ow are you? What 'as 'appened?"

Even if her female form was unfamiliar, V could still see flashes of his dad in her mannerisms, and the thick accent was entirely familiar. Having grown up with both languages, he could switch fluidly between them without much difficulty, but he'd missed his father's way of speaking. The heavy French pronunciation was more comforting than he could even begin to explain.

"I'm...," he began, "Just really confused, I guess. They put me back to an age when my best friend was my girlfriend, but she's not anymore, but for the last couple of days, she was. And it was weird enough between us before, honestly." Now his emotions and brain were all a huge mess, and even having sorted through it before wasn't helping him much. "And more than anything, I don't like that we got back together because of the scientists, you know? It wasn't... natural. We didn't decide it ourselves."

Her brow furrowed as V launched into the heart of the matter, and although she knew it wasn't fair to either set of people, she began by finding the equivalent that she was used to. Victoire's best friend, since she was so small that it felt like it had been her whole like, was Teddy. And she knew there was a female version of Teddy here, and it wasn't much of a leap to put the two together, considering her own Victoire. Except that in this instance they were not on as sure of footing, obviously.

"Did you not?" Fleur's head cocked to the side a bit. "'Ave the scientists forced the issue, or 'ave they only made you see what things were like before? If you are not 'happy with the choice, why did you make it?"

"We didn't make the choice," V said, frowning. "We were just suddenly sixteen and seventeen again, and we thought we were together. Now we don't even know what to do with ourselves." Theo might have replied to him by now, but he didn't want to look at his journal. Not yet.

He sighed. "But I know you don't have any answers to that, either." Patting the couch beside him, he gestured for her to sit down. "I just really wanted to see you anyway."

"I 'ave to admit, being so young was the best, if it 'ad to 'appen. 'Ad I been teenager... It would not be good for anyone. I am sorry it was so 'ard on you." A young teen and she would have been surly. Older, and she would have been attempting to seduce any male in her sights. Given that more than a few were related to her in some way she wouldn't have known yet, that would have been worse than awkward.

Joining him on the couch, she tucked her legs underneath her body and turned to face him, echoing his sigh. "I wish I did 'ave answers for you. It is my job, non? But I do 'ave sweets," she remembered, pulling the bag from her pocket and opening it before holding it out to him.

"This whole place is hard," V admitted. "I don't like the way the scientists mess with us. I liked Greece, though," he admitted as an afterthought. He'd really enjoyed being in the past, being in the Olympics, wearing togas. Drinking Greek wine. But then he'd gone straight from that to being younger, and his head had been completely turned around.

He managed a smile. "But I don't mind getting to meet my family from other worlds," he said, "And I definitely don't mind sweets."

"When it becomes easier, or even a bit familiar, there is always something that is making it 'ard again. That is what I 'ave seen so far, at the least. It is not even always the world switching. I think they want us on our toes for some reason. It is better to be believing that there is a purpose to the mad'ouse than to think it is for perverse amusement."

Smiling warmly, Fleur lifted herself until she was kneeling on the couch and, cupping his head in her hands, kissed his forehead gently before settling back down. "Je suis tellement heureux de tous vous rencontrer ainsi. And to see my enfants grown up! It is almost enough to not miss the ones not 'ere."
