Who: Sirius Blackblood & Remus Lupinblood
What: Sirius wants to know why Remus is so weird
When: Monday afternoon
Where: The Forum
Warnings: Bad language, undoubtedly

Sirius snapped his journal close. This was why he hated forms of written communication. People seemed to think it was their god-given right once someone handed them a quill to be as bloody subtle and cryptic as they pleased. Sirius hated that shit. If you had something to say, then say it. It was a lot more difficult to be so bloody snarky for so long face to face. Of course, Sirius had a record of being pretty damn snarky live in person himself, but when it came to stuff like this, when it came to issues he found people usually cracked much more quickly face to face.

Of course, Sirius didn't know what his issue was with Remus. There'd been one for as long as they'd both been here, that was for sure, but he just didn't know what the hell it was. We come from different times. Sirius could pretty much devise what that meant, but he didn't want to accept it- not yet, and if he was going to have to accept it, then he wanted Remus to explain it to him, not Remus' handwriting.

Setting out towards the Forum in his toga (which, it should be noted, Sirius felt perhaps more comfortable in than most- he'd been to his fare share of toga parties, he had the experience), Sirius kept an eye out for Remus. He easily spotted the back of his head and then called out, "Hey!" his voice rather sharp and edgy. "So, what the fuck?" Sirius asked bluntly. "Care to elaborate? I'm afraid I'm not as clever as you," he said.

Remus knew he was being facetious, yet he couldn't stop the words from flowing from his quill as Sirius' words appeared on the pages of his journal. It wasn't like him to be so short, so vague in his answers. However, he wasn't himself. He wasn't the same man Sirius knew from his time. Hell, he wasn't even the same man that he was when he had been brought to the compound months before. He hardly recognized the face that looked back at him in the mirror each morning.

Losing Nymphadora had been hard. Despite their promises not to look past the current day, it had been hard not to. He had been selfish; he had stolen those moments and had hoarded them, saving them up for moments like this when he felt alone. Lily had found a James to distract her, and Remus didn't want to interrupt her found happiness with the numbness that had settled within him when Teddy had left. And he couldn't turn to the man coming up behind him. Sirius didn't know what had happened between them; Remus alone carried that burden.

His navy gaze fixated on the space where one of the numerous columns on the porch joined up with the roof when he heard Sirius' voice, the edge to his words causing the muscles of his neck to tense. "Time is a funny thing, isn't it?" Remus answered, taking a step away from the soaring column. "You're clever enough to realize that people change. Things happen."

It still startled Sirius to see Remus older than he was. Was two years really supposed to look that different? Sirius hadn't thought so. He'd told birds he was twenty before and they believed him, after all. There seemed to be a world of a difference between him and Remus though, and it was unsettling. As surly as his expression might have been as he approached Remus, once he turned around there was a momentary flash of wonder. Maybe he hadn't seen Remus enough in this past month that he wasn't quite used to it- well, actually, he knew he hadn't seen enough of him, that was sort of the problem.

The vagueness of that answer brought the look of annoyance back. Sirius scoffed, "That's rubbish," he said. "What, you expect me to believe we just...drifted a part?" he asked. As the full weight of that possibility sunk in, Sirius expression shifted yet again, shrinking back into a pained sort of look that made him look even younger- widening that gap between him and Moony. "So, what, we're not friends anymore then?" he asked quietly, though still rather intensely. His face might of faltered, but his voice maintained its edge.

Remus stood still as he felt Padfoot's gaze sweep over his face as the younger man tried to reconcile the Remus he had left behind with the man that stood in front of him. He had never looked as young as his peers, but now there were deeper lines on his face and more gray threaded through his hair. He nodded as if he could hear the question that Sirius' eyes held. Yes, two years was enough time to make him look different.

He arched a brow at the surly look that appeared, sitting back and letting Sirius work through the meanings of his words. He had done it before - sitting back and letting the other Marauders puzzle things out by themselves before he would step in and offer a helping hand. A shadow flickered across his face and he inclined his head, acknowledging the hit. "No," he simply said, letting the word fall between them. It didn't need any preamble, no fancy turn of phrase. "We haven't been for months."

Sirius felt as though Remus had punched him in the stomach. When he said it like that, so bluntly, so straight-forwardly, no, Sirius' stomach clenched up and the air got caught in his lungs. How could that have happened? Why? The questions were written all over Sirius' face, but he didn't ask any of them. He didn't say anything, in fact, he just stood there, looking pretty crushed.

For a fleeting second, Sirius wondered if he was facing a boggart. This had to be one of his worst fears, that his friends would leave him, that they would all fall a part too like how his family had unraveled so rapidly once he turned eleven, and this time, he'd really be alone. Sirius wondered about James and Lily and Peter. Had he done something to make them all mad? He wasn't sure how so much could have changed in two years. It terrified him, really. What could have happened? Why? The questions persisted in his head, but he just couldn't push the words out.

After all that hesitation, all he managed to get out was, "Oh."

Often, before Sirius had arrived, Remus would wonder what he would say to his friend if he appeared. Sometimes he wouldn't say anything and would return seamlessly into how they used to be. Once or twice he would wish for an older Sirius, one that would come back and assure him that they had reconciled and things were back to how they had before then. At the time his biggest fear had been Sirius appearing right after that evening, the scowl and narrowed eyes still haunting the usual playful features. However, he had been wrong. Telling Sirius what had happened was the worst scenario imaginable; one so horrible that each time his mind landed on it his mind would slide past it, refusing to consider what would happen.

He shifted, quietly regarding Sirius as if he was afraid he would disappear from him again. He pressed his lips together, reaching back in his mind for memories how they used to be. A brief image of a young Sirius flinging back the curtains around his four-poster and demanding what he was doing suddenly flashed through his mind. What was he doing? Was it right to hold Sirius accountable for actions he had yet to perform in situations he had no idea that would arise?

"It was a hard time for us all," he settled on, his hands clasping loosely behind his back. "We weren't always ourselves."

Sirius supposed it had to do with the war then. He had been worrying about that in his own time, dreading going out into a world where it mattered a lot more if someone called you a mudblood. One thing that Sirius hadn't worried about was that it might tear him and his friends a part. He'd never even considered it. He thought they were stronger than that, invincible. Apparently he had been incredibly naive.

He gave a small nod in response to what Sirius said, but them seemed suddenly determined. "But...if we weren't ourselves, why would we let that define the rest of our lives?" he asked. "We win, don't we?" Sirius asked rhetorically. "That's what the Lovegood sisters said, and they're from our world, our future," he pointed out. "And then we should go back to normal," Sirius said resolutely.

Remus warily eyed the determination that flashed in Sirius' eyes and sidestepped out of the center of the path. He was no stranger to that look; he had seen it countless times in school and for a brief moment before a door had closed in front of him. The Marauders, at least where he came from, were broken. It was a theme, he had learned, in other worlds, but it was never broken between the two of them. His eyes squinted at Sirius, wondering, not for the first time, the extent of which Sirius knew about the other worlds.

"Perhaps we did," Remus haltingly allowed, his brow furrowing. But did they/i> win, the Marauders? He knew the truth behind Petunia's lies, but what was to say that they hadn't patched things up? He hoped that they had, but he couldn't be certain with little evidence. He couldn't remember much of what the Lovegoods had said, only that Lily and James had lived, the war was won, and he was a professor. Could it be possible that they knew more? He shook his head once, twice, and then returned his dark gaze to Sirius' face. "Do you want to hear what happened?"
