ancient olympic world

The countdown has been posted, and we're on to the next flip!

overview.

The taken walk out of the compound and find themselves walking among large columns and statues of men and women in chiton, the peplos, himation, and chlamys. Welcome to Greece, an ancient culture rich in history, art, religion and archetecture. The Taken are in the city of Olympia, in the Southwest of Greece.

As of the flip, the Taken will find themselves in Ancient Grecian clothing and will no longer have access to the Compound. On the outlier of Olympia, there will be a scattering of stone houses for the Taken to stay in while they are in this world. They are planned around courtyards.

In Olympia, the Taken will find various classical Ancient Greece architecture including the buildings most relevant to their stay. They will find the gymnasium, a swimming pool, the stadium and the tunnel leading to the stadium where the Olympic games will be taking place. They will find natives tending to the markets and their trainers for the week will also be non-Taken natives.

There is no need to have a new name; whenever you speak, you will be speaking in Greek and your name will automatically be translated to something more befitting of the environment. With your clothing and language, you will fit right in … well, as long as you don't go around cursing Zeus!

When not preoccupied by the sporting facilities, Taken will find an outdoor market where they can purchase food and other necessities, though they should keep in mind that overzealous spending in the beginning will render them incapable of any further purchases in later days. Nothing purchased here will come back to the Compound except for that which is provided to the Taken by the Scientists.

There is a communal bathing facility—one for men and one for women. And if you are so inclined to make an offering to Zeus, Taken will find an alter for the greek god in the city, as well. The city has many wonders to behold, just one of them being a statue of Zeus at Olympia, made of gold and ivory by a Greek sculptor Pheidias inside one of the Temples, towering 42 feet high.

*For the sake of fairness, it will be assumed that all Taken have equal opportunity in this flip world. Women will be allowed to compete and will not be treated unjustly by the natives simply for being women! Same for children, although there will be extra protection on children to keep from any harm coming to them.

**Also note that you are at complete liberty to have your character injured in the games (physical activity always has potential dangers!) and you can absolutely ask for the mods to roll randomly to determine severity of injuries but if you decide to do this, please discuss it with those with whom you have direct plots to make sure they are on board with what you have in mind, as well. This does not apply to Omegas. Sorry, Omegas, no boo-boos for you!

time & events.

The moment the Taken arrive in Ancient Greece, they will be prompted to select their event on a first come, first serve basis. Saturday through Friday will be devoted to training for your event and exploring Ancient Greece should you be so inclined! The games will officially begin on the following Saturday and will last for three days with the events spread out across those three days and an awards ceremony taking place on the last day.

Taken are able to sign up for ONE the following (up to ten people for each event):
Running
- the stade race, which was the pre-eminent test of speed, covering the Olympia track from one end to the other (200m foot race)
- the diaulos (two stades - 400m foot race),
- dolichos (ranging between 7 and 24 stades).

Jumping
Athletes used stone or lead weights called halteres to increase the distance of a jump. They held onto the weights until the end of their flight, and then jettisoned them backwards.

Discus throw
The discus was originally made of stone and later of iron, lead or bronze. The technique was very similar to today's freestyle discus throw.

Wrestling
This was highly valued as a form of military exercise without weapons. It ended only when one of the contestants admitted defeat.

Boxing FULL!
Boxers wrapped straps (himantes) around their hands to strengthen their wrists and steady their fingers. Initially, these straps were soft but, as time progressed, boxers started using hard leather straps, often causing disfigurement of their opponent's face.

Pankration
This was a primitive form of martial art combining wrestling and boxing, and was considered to be one of the toughest sports. Greeks believed that it was founded by Theseus when he defeated the fierce Minotaur in the labyrinth.

Equestrian events
These included horse races and chariot races (chariot races are full!) and took place in the Hippodrome, a wide, flat, open space.

***If all Taken sign up and there are still slots left to allow up to ten in an event, Taken may elect to participate in another! Everyone needs to get their pick of the events before we double up, though. :)

info the taken are given.

All Taken are given period clothing fashioned in adornments of their block’s coloring, a laurel wreath crown and their choice of footwear.

pie Taken also receive a case of red bull energy drinks. It gives you wings, you know.
