Who: Seamus Finnigancan and Ginny Weasleyheir
What: Christmas gift exchanging!
Where: Ginny's Unit in Pie
When: Thursday Evening; "Christmas Eve"
Rating: C for Cute
Status: In progress

It was going to be wonderful, Ginny told herself for the millionth time that day. Her room was decorated in twinkling fairy lights that she'd procured at the start of the world, the dent in the wall had been repaired, and everything was looking fantastic for the start of her and Seamus' gift exchange. She'd agonized for hours about what to get for him; desperately seeking something both material and sentimental that simultaneously had function, and when she had finally located that one item, she almost wanted to hit herself. How much more obvious could it be?

She had bought it on the spot earlier in the day, before heading back to her block to prepare for the night. Ginny sincerely hoped that her charms would work, as she knew that the thought put into this would mean more than anything. There wasn't much complexity of them, but a lot of research, and she set off the first charm, one that had the lights twinkle and small bells chime in time to the music of O Holy Night as she went to answer her door.

"Happy Christmas," Ginny greeted with a grin, stepping back to allow Shay into her unit. "We're going to church."

Seamus had spent a lot of time thinking of what to get Ginny for Christmas. Of course, he was limited by what was available in the compound, even if there was a pretty good selection. First he had to settle on the tone of the gift- was it going to be romantic, funny, or intellectual? It was most likely going to be romantic, of course, but nonetheless Seamus tested with a lot of different options, carefully imagining the effect each gift would have, until he finally stumbled upon the perfect thing. It was simple, really, and so specific that Seamus was sure that it was what he was supposed to get her, as if that was the whole reason why it was there in the shop in the first place.

With the small package wrapped neatly and tucked into the pocket of Seamus' pants, he knocked lightly on the door. Seamus beamed once he saw Ginny. "Happy Christmas," he answered back and was surprised to find that suddenly it almost did actually feel like Christmas. Seamus kissed her gently on the lips, and then pulled back, an amused smile on his face as she said where they were going, "What?" he asked.

She let herself get lost in the kiss for a moment, heart racing as was becoming the norm for her when she spent time with Seamus, before they broke apart. Ginny returned his smile with a shy one of her own, pulling him further into her unit. "Church! I went to the library and looked up short Christmas messages for the season, and we're going to listen to one." She hoped that he didn't think it was a bad idea; her intention was to give him a little slice of home, one that she couldn't truly replicate, she knew, but something that could just be for them.

"Unless you hate it," she added. The song still played in the background, the last few notes finishing before it moved on to Away in a Manger. The songs were on a loop that would continue to play for at least an hour, and Ginny hummed along to it. They'd been playing all day in her unit as she perfected the charms, and she now knew at least a few to get through a pretend Christmas mass.

Seamus looked impressed and then smiled, "You mean, you put it together?" he asked, amazed. "That's brilliant, Gin!" he said enthusiastically, and then laughed. "Hate it?" he said incredulously, "I already love it," he assured her, wrapping an arm around her waist as he followed her inside.

As he entered her room, Seamus took in the flickering lights and the last notes of O Holy Night blending into Away in a Manger. Seamus smiled at Ginny, "Did you pick out the music too?" he asked her, a warmness filling inside him as he realized how much attention she paid to the things he rambled on about that she actually knew that he'd like something like this.

Ginny leaned her head on Shay's shoulder, a pleased smile on her face. She had a habit of listening and observing everything around her; it was something that her family already knew, but before this "Christmas" she'd no real reason to extend that to people outside of that circle. "Yeah," she said, a pleased lilt to her tone. "I...I wanted it to be special for you."

If she had any doubts about whether Seamus would like the gift or not, they were truly eradicated now. His tone was one of genuine wonderment, and she nodded. "I've been in the library a lot, looking up Muggle hymns." She'd also gone into the village to listen to the music in the shops a lot, had inquired various times about the titles of the songs before coming back and working on the charms.

She turned towards him, their fingers entwined and said, "You mean so much to me, Shay. I just wanted to show you that."

Of course, Seamus knew she had put it together, even when he asked the question. Who else would have done it? Still, it was amazing to hear her say it, to explain it. "It's perfect," he told her quietly, almost reverently.

Seamus was quiet for a moment, a somewhat unusual occurrence for him, but he was enjoying the sound of Ginny's voice mixed with the music too much to interrupt anything. He looked down at her when she said that, his breath getting caught in his lungs. It was such a big thing to hear, such an amazing thing to hear, and no one had ever told that to him before. Well, besides his parents and grandparents, but that was a differently thing entirely, wasn't it? Seamus leaned over and kissed her tenderly on the forehead. "You mean so much to me too, Ginny," he told her. "And this- this is brilliant, I can definitely see it," he told her. "I have something for you that I hope will show you what you mean to me too," he told her. "But should I give it to you later?" he asked.

With a broad smile, Ginny leaned on her toes and kissed him again, wrapping her arms around his neck as she did so. Words weren't enough for her to express how wonderful she felt that Shay thought it was perfect. Her heart flooded with a rush of affection towards him, and as she broke the kiss, it took great effort not to let incoherent babbling out.

The quiet from him was different, but not unwelcome. Ginny heard his breath hitch for a moment, and she stopped her humming, instead choosing to glance at him. The warmth that had flooded her cheeks in a blush had started to travel down her body, making her buzz with a happy feeling that she loved. "We can do that after church? It's not long, the charms only last for about ten minutes."

As she said it, she directed him to her bed, the only real place big enough for the two of them to sit together in the room. With a flick of her wand, a voice of a man began to speak, talking of the nativity and the story of Christ's birth. Ginny snuggled into Shay's side, her arms wrapped around his waist as far as she could reach, tucked compactly under his arm. She'd memorized the words while putting the small service together, and she recited, "And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people..."

Seamus gently brushed Ginny's cheek with the palm of his hand as it turned red, feeling the warmth emanating from her cheek in his hand as he smiled at her. "Okay," Seamus agreed, and then sat down next to her on their makeshift pew, which was indeed a great deal more comfortable than the wooden benches in St. Peter and Paul's Church...though if they had this cushion-y seating, surely there would be a true epidemic of elderly people falling asleep- more than usual even.

Although it wasn't the most orthodox setting, Seamus made the sign of the cross to signify the beginning of a religious service, no matter how small or personal it was. As the voice echoed in the room, Seamus marveled again at how much work Ginny had put into all of this. He smiled at her when she began to recite the words, and he joined her, "The Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people," he recited quietly, in sync with Ginny.

The time spent preparing was minimal compared to the reaction that Seamus gave off during the short service, and Ginny gave herself a mental pat on the back. Nothing she'd ever given anyone had the same effect this did. She briefly wondered if she was this considerate at home, to whoever she was close with like this in her time, but she instead inched closer to Shay, finishing the scripture with him. As the man began to explain it more thoroughly, relating it to the present day, which seemed to be the late 1990's if Ginny could keep up with the Muggle lingo splattered in it, she relaxed, drawing circles on Shay's lower back.

The message that she had selected was brief, but lovely all the same, and as it finished and the last of that particular charm faded, O Holy Night started again. "I think that if all church services are like that, I should have started attending ages ago," Ginny joked, transfixed by the blinking lights.

Seamus listened to the voice of the phantom priest, recognizing some of the world events he was talking about. The late '90s were relatively peaceful times in the muggle world- there were wars going on, crime, violence, but nothing quite to the scale of what was happening in the wizarding world. Muggle Ireland, for one, was still giddy with their shockingly good economy that had begun to soar in a matter of a few years during the close of the 1990s. It would be a different homily indeed if it had come from a wizarding church. In fact, Seamus had gone to his mum and grandmother's wizarding parish so as not to be reminded of their absent fathers and husbands too much- Seamus remembered thinking it must have taken ever ounce of optimism Father Peter had left in him to not just throw his hands up and say "Well, that's it, you lot. Show's over. Best we can really hope for now is that Christ returns sometime soon."

Seamus quickly pushed that grim evening out of his mind. This one was much nicer, in fact, maybe it was sort of like a do-over. Even if his family still wasn't here, at least he knew the war ended well, his Dad was able to come home eventually. "There usually a bit longer, but once I got over thinking they were dead boring as a kid, I started to enjoy them," Seamus explained, watching how the lights lit up Ginny's face in an odd spectrum of color.

She continued to run her fingers down his back, tracing letters and numbers in his silence. Her own last Christmas home had been a dim affair. The talk of the war's escalation had been pushed aside for the day, but everything had felt wrong, fake in a way that Ginny couldn't handle at the time. Charlie and Bill had both come home for the holidays, they'd stayed until New Year's but nothing would help Ginny leave the funk that she had fell into. Eventually, she and Charlie ended up burrowed under a blanket fort to talk the night away. She wondered what Christmas back home was like in her year. For a moment, her thoughts drifted past that, to what it'd be like when she returned. Would it be a inhaling deeply, having memories she couldn't grasp?

Shay's voice broke her out of her thoughts and she glanced over from the lights. "It's nice, I think, to have faith in something bigger than yourself, you know? Something to believe in, other than being against something." Content to sit in her bed for a while, Ginny made no effort to move, deciding instead to let Shay direct where they would go from here. "I'd like to have that."

Seamus nodded in agreement, "Yeah, I think I probably got more into it this year because of that," he said. "It helped a lot to think that no matter how powerful and important people like You-Know-Who, Umbridge, the Carrows, the Death Eaters, all of them think they are, that there's something out there greater than them that they'll have to answer to," Seamus said. "And, I don't know, I guess it gave me courage to do all that rule-breaking," he said and laughed lightly. "Which sounds ironic, but like, there's the rules the Ministry and the Carrows put in place, which are really sick and twisted, but then there's the stuff they teach you at mass and for me in Catholic school. You know, basically to be a good person and good to others, even if it's hard," Seamus shrugged. "There's a lot of stuff about that in the Bible- standing up for what's right no matter how much shite it will get you, so I guess it just became really...relatable, which is why I started to like it more," he explained. "I mean, when I was a kid I couldn't really get it. The hardest choice you'd have to make back then was like, whether or not to stand up to the classroom bully or something," he said.

Seamus smiled a bit. "That got pretty deep though," he said. "Do you want your present now instead?" he asked her.

"I don't mind things getting deep," Ginny said. "I like hearing your opinions, what makes you tick...everything really." She felt that she could listen to him, speak for hours, really wanted him to if he felt like it. There were so many things she wanted to know about him, his childhood, Hogwarts, the world he lived in, and she'd never get bored. "I think that the right choices are never the easy ones."

She turned giddy at the thought of a present and she nodded enthusiastically, grabbing for his own gifts at the side of her bed. "I don't turn down presents."

Seamus nodded with a bit of a frown- it was true. In fact, there was probably a bit too much truth to that statement in the times they were from.

"Alright, I'll go first?" he suggested. Seamus suddenly felt a burst of nervousness now that it came time to give her his gift. He hoped she didn't take it the wrong way, that it wouldn't freak her out or something. Seamus hadn't considered the sort of implications that come with giving a girl a ring when he bought it, but maybe he should have. It was too late now, Seamus would just have to see how she took it.

Seamus slipped his hand into his pocket, but before he took out the package, he looked at Ginny. "I hope- don't take it like I'm jumping ahead or anything like that," he said nervously. "There's an explanation that goes with it," he told her as he presented her with the small, square package.

Ginny looked at him curiously, her brow furrowing just slightly as he spoke. And then her heart stopped beating as she looked at the small box that she took wordlessly. She'd seen a ring box before, knew the size and shape of this box was in line with the ones she had seen and with a small smile, she opened it.

"Shay," she breathed, gazing down at it. The ring looked familiar, as if she had seen the shape of it before, but she couldn't place what it was called. "It's beautiful."

Never had Ginny considered someone buying her a ring, whether it was a friend or someone she was quickly falling for. Suddenly, an image of a muggle friend Birgit came to mind, of a ring she'd been given from her Mum. "A Claddagh ring? That's what it's called, right?"

Seamus watched Ginny's face anxiously as she opened the present, and then broke into a grin when she said it was beautiful.

"Yeah, it's named after an old fishing village in Galway where they first started making rings like this about three hundred years ago or something like that," he told her. "And there's a lot of meaning to it," Seamus explained. "You see, the heart's symbolizes, well, love of course, the hands are for friendship, and the crown is for loyalty," he told her. "And those are the three things you need to have a good relationship," Seamus said and then smiled at her. "Which...I think we have them," he told her and smiled a little more. "And the way you wear it is important to," Seamus said. "If you're not married, you wear it on your right hand with the tip of the heart pointing outwards if your heart's open to love, and with the tip pointing inwards if you're...already in love..." he said. "Or just, you know, a relationship," Seamus added hastily.

"My Mum has one of these," Seamus told her. "But not from my Dad, some families will have really old ones, heirlooms, you know, and they pass them down from mother to daughter, so my Mum actually got hers from her Mum," Seamus said. "But it doesn't always have to be given to a girl by a mother, you can get it from anyone- anyone who really cares about you," Seamus told her, smiling again. "It just...always seemed like a nice tradition, I thought you'd like it," he told her.

"I love it," she said reverently, smiling up at Shay. "This is the most thoughtful, wonderful present I've ever received. Thank you." Ginny leaned up slightly to kiss him, beaming all the while. When it ended, she gave the box to Shay.

"Help me put it on?" She asked, holding out her right hand. "Tip inwards, because it's wonderful and symbolic and sweet and I love you so much and want everyone to see it." The words had flowed directly from her mind to her mouth, with no thought process in between, and Ginny froze, eyes still on the box.

"Oh, my God." Her face flamed for a moment, reliving the last minute. "Did I say that out loud?"

Outwardly, yes, she was mortified she let that out so easily, but inwardly, Ginny breathed a sigh of contentment. It felt amazing to say. She had felt something strong for Shay before the first time they'd even kissed, and had known for at least a few days that her affection for him was more than just of fancy. "I...you know what? I don't care that I said it like that, because it's true. I love you, Shay."

Seamus felt a rush of relief and happiness come over him when Ginny said she loved it, which was really a very good feeling. "I'm so glad you like it," Seamus told her.

"Of course," he said. Seamus took the ring gingerly between his thumb and pointer finger and gently pushed it onto her ring finger. When Ginny began to speak again, he looked up at her. At first, he wasn't quite sure if he heard her correctly- did she say what he thought she said? That she loved him? Well, her reaction after sort of confirmed it, Seamus opened his mouth to say something, but then she went on talking and said it again, a whole lot more clearly.

He wished that there was a better way to describe it, since it was so bloody cliche, but Seamus was no poet, and the best way he could thing of to explain what was going on with his chest was that his heart skipped a beat, and that it was racing pretty fast now to catch up. "I love you too, Gin," Seamus told her, his voice strong and absolutely certain.

Her cheeks almost hurt from the smile that was sure to split her face in two, and as he slid the ring in her finger, Ginny's heart began to pick up speed. "You do?" She asked stupidly. Of course he wouldn't say it if he didn't mean it; the words wouldn't make her feel so weak if they weren't genuine and much to her surprise, tears sprung to her eyes. "Not that I don't believe it, but...it's...I didn't expect it to happen."

Forgetting all sorts of proper behavior for, Ginny launched herself into his lap, kissing him again. "Ooh," she said breathlessly. "Your presents." She grabbed the wrapped package and bag. "Happy Christmas."

"Yes," Seamus said, take her hands in his and giving them a little squeeze. "I'm positive," he told her.

Seamus laughed a bit as she jumped into his lap. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her on the lips. Honestly, Seamus had almost forgotten all about his present as well. He grinned and opened his presents from Ginny. "Oh!" he said excitedly. "This is brilliant! My Dad had one just like this," he said. Because of that, Seamus knew exactly how to use it. After checking it to make sure the film was in it and ready, he quickly held it up to his face and snapped a candid picture of Ginny. "Cheese!" he said, precisely at the moment he snapped the picture though. Grinning, Seamus took the Polaroid out of the slot at the bottom and began to shake it dry.

"Did he?" Ginny laughed as he took her picture. "Oi! This is our adventure book," she reprimanded with a grin, gently taking the camera. Leaning against his chest, she said, "Now look like you like me," and snapped one of her own, waving the picture when it came out.

As it dried, she opened the scrapbook to show Shay what was already in it. Most of the ten photos in it were from their time in New York, both dressed in their garb from the era, and one was from Atlantic City. The others were from the past few days, ugly sweaters abounding. She smiled happily, holding the photograph out for him to see. "It turned out really nicely."
