Who: Harry & Hermione (canon)
What: ANIMAGUSSSS TIMES
When: Wednesday night
Where: Hermione's room in Pi(e)
Warnings: nah. Well, maybe a little sad in Harry's narrative.

Today was good. Today, it was going to work. Harry had spent all morning participating in the reindeer games, and he could still feel what it had been like to be a different animal. And then, he had spent the afternoon and early evening running around in the snowball fight. He was physically tired but mentally energized, and the endorphins from all of the exercise-- not to mention the positive sentiments from his birthday and Christmas in general-- were holding many of his worries at bay. If there was going to be any day for him to get into the right mental state to transform, it would be today.

But there was still the problem of how hard he was trying, and so he had been at it for a few hours now. Breathing, trying to relax and focus all at once, and attempting to transform; then taking a moment to collect himself before trying again. Trying to reach down into his very soul and find his inner animal, and then make his magic create it; there were so many things to hold together in his mind all at once, and he had to hold onto them loosely, will them to work together rather than force it. It took an enormous amount of emotional and mental and magical effort, but tonight he was refusing to be frustrated with himself. He was so close.

And then, on what must have been the hundredth try, he had it. He felt something click in his mind, felt the connection between his will and his magic that came with successfully mastering a spell, and it was starting. The very atoms of his body were starting to shift, and he was... he was growing.

It was such a strange and surprising sensation that Harry was startled out of his concentration almost immediately, returning back to his own form the moment he lost his grasp on the magic. He was breathing hard, as if he'd just run for miles, and staring at Hermione in wide-eyed shock. "Holy..." he began, and trailed off, speechless. "That was..."

What had that been? Or more accurately, what was he? Something huge, something much larger than Harry himself; for that brief moment, he'd had the overwhelming feeling that he was becoming something immense. Something very large and physically powerful, and that... that was not at all what he had expected. He'd stopped expecting a cockroach, but he still hadn't expected that. Most of the time, even when he managed to succeed or hold his ground, Harry still viewed himself as being rather small; not insignificantly so, but certainly smaller than his larger than life persona. An animagus form said so much about a person, though. If his was enormous and imposing, what did that say about him?

He had done it before, and he could do it again. With that as her mantra, Hermione knew without a shadow of a doubt, that she would not give up on Harry's transformation. They'd done it together, and the feeling that she'd had the day he first accomplished it was filling her up to the brim. It was going to be today. Hermione knew it. She had spent the majority of the day outdoors, exhausting her body in order to relax it for the transformation that would occur. It was always easier for her to be in a state of physical calm, and mental stability before the transformation. For now, though, she would watch Harry, occasionally offering a tip and showing him her own form as he requested.

And then, suddenly, he was moving. Well, not his feet, and not in an exact direction. But Harry, was expanding, she could see the outlines begin, and Hermione's eyes widened. As suddenly as it was there, it was gone, and Harry's wide eyes met her own. "Harry!" she squealed, so excited that she bounded over and hugged him. "That was brilliant!"

It had been so very long since Hermione had seen him do that, the last time had to be before her wedding, but it felt amazing to see Harry grasp it again, just as similar as the first time. "How did it feel? Are you alright? I know that it can feel a little unusual the first few times that you really get it." As she had said countless times, Animagus magic was more of a mental transformation before a physical one. The most reassuring fact of seeing Harry do it was that he had to be in a good mental state.

"I'm really," Harry said breathlessly, "Really... I don't even know what the word for it is." He had taken hold of Hermione's arm without even consciously intending to, suddenly finding himself a little weak. It wasn't a physical weakness, but even the very brief transformation-- which had barely been anything at all-- had taken quite a lot out of him. Nevertheless, he was determined to do it again. "I'm alright. I think I've got it now. I want to--"

He cut himself off, took a step back, and closed his eyes. He breathed in, then out, then turned all of his focus inwards, searching for that feeling again. It was much easier this time, and this time he was able to hold onto it. He felt the same sensation, the shift in his form, the feeling of growing larger. It overwhelmed him, but he managed to hold on until it stopped.

And then he was... solid. His mind had changed, so his perception was fuzzy, but he could feel. He was large, furred, and warm-blooded; his body was heavy and muscled, and despite the strange new weight of his limbs, he felt that he could wield them rather deftly. He looked down at them, and was startled by the immense black paws that were exactly where he felt his hands should be. He was startled back into his own form again, and fell to the ground hard, on his hands and knees. It was almost a shock to see his own hands again, to feel his own limbs; his own body felt foreign. "Merlin," he said breathlessly. "That's..."

It was incredible. Shocking, and overwhelming, and amazing. He wanted to do it again, but was not even entirely sure he was capable of standing up, much less managing another transformation. Instead of trying to move, he tried to address the other question in his mind. "Was I-- am I-- was that a bear?"

She braced his arm with her own hand, concern lacing her features. Yes, the transformation always took a lot of energy out of her, but never this much. Not since the beginning. And with regular correspondence to Professor McGonagall, it had been a long while since either of them were truly exhausted from it. Hermione took a half step back, not fearful of being close to him as Harry did it a second time.

With a smile, Hermione stepped back towards him, touching the top of his head. "You're incredible, Harry," she murmured in admiration before he looked down and quickly landed on her floor. Immediately she dropped next to him, assisting him in sitting up. "That was wonderful! Isn't it just the most incredible feeling?"

She folded her legs underneath of her, nodding in response. "Yeah, you are. It really suits you. Bears are very protective of their young, you know."

Harry sat up, starting to smile at her enthusiasm. "Yeah," he said. "It's incredible, and weird and..." He gave her a sheepish smile, and chuckled. "I wasn't expecting to be anything that big."

He was a bear. Just wrapping his mind around that one was going to take some time. They were protective; well, Harry supposed that made sense, but anything could be protective over their children, really. Being protective was certainly in his nature, but Harry wasn't sure he felt like that was unique, distinguishable, something that would weigh heavily on the scales that decided what form his inner animal would turn out to be. "What else do you know about bears?"

There was even more reading to be done now, he realized; not about the process or transformation itself, but about what he was becoming. When he imagined a bear in his mind, it was standing in a cage at the zoo, which was the only time he'd actually seen one himself-- in pictures, he'd seen one plucking a fish out of a river, or wandering through a meadow. Well, at least it made sense that he was something relatively... peaceful, not something that automatically struck fear into someone's heart, not something that had automatically reacted aggressively. Because Hermione had been right there, and if he'd turned into something-- well, she'd known what he was going to be, and that she would be safe. Still, Merlin, if he'd been something dangerous...

But of course he wouldn't be. He was a fighter, but not an aggressor, not an attacker. A bear... a bear actually suited that fairly well, he supposed, from the sense he had gotten of the beast's instincts. It hadn't moved to harm Hermione because she was no threat to him, despite how close she was; it had a relatively peaceful mind, the kind that would be content wandering through forests or patiently waiting for a fish to swim by in the river. And yet, Harry had felt the power in those enormous, clawed paws, and the muscular weight of the bear's body-- if he chose to fight, he would be a force to be reckoned with. Certainly enough to take on a werewolf, which had been his dad and godfather's use of their animagus forms. The amount of physical power in the bear's body actually frightened him a little, because of what it meant about him. Did he have that much power, in a different way, in his human form?

"I really can't believe that just happened," he said, after he'd thought that through. He let out a breath, and then laughed again. "I want to try again, but I think I should wait a bit, yeah?"
