What: it's Harry's birthday evening, but he has a present for Ginny.
When: Tuesday, 31 July (backdated)
Where: their unit.
Warnings: a lot of cute/sap. Otherwise TBD.
It was Harry's birthday, and it was also (sort of) Christmas, and he'd been rather selfish lately in letting himself enjoy it. Taking part in celebrating the holiday, accepting that other people wanted to celebrate him. It had actually been really nice, all the people wishing him a happy birthday. That was the best thing about this place for him personally, getting to see how many people cared about him, in his past, present, and future. Having come from a time when he'd felt awfully alone and grief-stricken, it had gone a long way towards healing his heart. This place had also broken his heart a number of times-- more than he could count on one hand-- but he was coping, by holding onto everyone who was here.
And then his mum had said something about telling the people who were here how they felt, to be sure that they'd never doubt it. So that if someone he really cared about disappeared, Harry would at least know that they knew he cared. Since he knew the feeling of having them disappear with things unsolved between them-- as had happened with Ginny the last time she was here-- he had taken that very much to heart. And with the way he felt now about Ginny, and his family, he had decided to do something about it.
Maybe his birthday wasn't the best day to do it, but it felt right. He had loved hearing that he bought drinks for Teddy on his birthday in one world, because spending time with his godson was worth far more to him than the cost of a drink; really, the same logic worked here. If forced to be selfish rather than selfless about it, he would argue that this was, in a way, a gift to himself.
He didn't get an opportunity to catch Ginny entirely alone, because between Christmas and his birthday, the day was too full. But that was alright, because they were staying together; he knew that at the end of the day, they'd be back in their unit alone, just the two of them. And, after a very long and amazing birthday, that was precisely what happened.
After they'd put Alby to bed, Harry held on to Ginny's hand as they went back to their own room, and closed the door behind them. He hadn't really planned how to do this, but he began with, "So. I got you something."
