Who: Hermione and Viktor
What: Lunch
Where: Starting at Finnigan's
When: After Battlescars
Rating: SFW

Hermione didn't usually look forward to a Battlescars meeting. She went every week because it was the only way she could make herself feel like she was normal. It was her way of working against the celebrity that many tried to ascribe to her. It was her way of being a part of the every day workings of their world that allowed her to be on the same page as others.

Ron rarely if ever came with her. In fact she felt as if they'd been growing further and further apart. Whether it was his work schedule or her sudden focus on S.P.E.W. initiatives was yet to be seen. While she felt the change in their relationship she didn't feel comfortable talking to Ron about it. It was strange really, they'd been together for all these years and should be at a place where they could talk about anything.

Then she'd heard from Viktor. They'd always been able to talk no matter what was going on in their lives. He was the first person she'd ever told about her feelings toward Ron. Viktor had listened to Hermione and their friendship had grown from there. It was amazing how quickly they'd become accustomed to each other. Truth be told there had been a time when she had actually thought that if Ron never came around she could easily end up with Viktor.

Herimone knew that she ought to feel a twinge of guilt for how eagerly she looked forward to the end of the meeting. She'd even taken time to braid her hair that morning to tame it before slipping into a cute dress with a pink pull over. All through the meeting, she kept running her hand over her hair to make certain there were no stray strands trying to creep out. Finally, they'd finished and after dismissal she quickly made her way down the stairs.

"I hope you haven't been waiting long," she smiled at Viktor as she approached. The meeting had run a little longer than normal and she hated the idea that she'd kept him waiting.

Hermioine was grateful that Viktor didn't press. It was one of the things she'd found most attractive about him when they'd first met. Even when it was evident that she hadn't experienced the best of days he never pushed her to talk further about it. Then again, that was also a trait she found rather endearing in Ron as well. The difference between the two was that Viktor was more likely to simply sit and wait for her to be ready to talk than Ron.

"That's the trick isn't it," she said taking a sip of her drink. "To be so adorable that no matter how annoyed you become with them they always get away with whatever they are doing." She held her glass just above the the table and swirled the liquid inside. Was she still talking about Misha or were other thoughts creeping into her mind?

"Not really. I was hoping to get some actual questions to take back to the House Elves. Most of my work has already been digested and vetted through Kreacher." Hermione knew she'd told Viktor about her frustrations with the elf. The simple fact that Hermione had been able to get him to concede or agree to most of her thoughts meant that it was highly unlikely there would be much push back from the elves at Hogwarts.

"I am thinking this is vhy children are so adorable. That way, you don't give in to your exasperation when they do things wrong, because they're too funny or cute to be terribly mad," he half-joked. "By the time they pass that stage, they know how to circumvent it." He smiled slightly. He adored his children, but there were definitely times when they tried the patience.

"Vat, like... hm, vat process would you prefer if you feel abused?" he said. He thought her concern for elvish welfare was great, and she seemed to be taking a better angle on it than in the past. "Hm that is good, though you might vant to run it past an elf other than Kreacher as vell?" he suggested. Kreacher, he knew, wasn't the most... stable of elves, though he had improved somewhat, he suspected, since the war.

"It is definitely their best defense mechanism," she chucked slightly as a memory came back to her. "There was one time when Teddy had just learned to toddle around that if it weren't for his cuteness I may have strangled him." Hermione might not have children of her own yet, but she had enjoyed her fair share of having Teddy around. He was like a nephew to her and he had definitely helped her learn to be a little more patient.

"No," she took another sip of her drink. "Like what concerns may surround their not being bound to someone specifically. I've heard murmurings that the bond keeps them from abusing their magic. There are even beliefs out there, though they aren't held by many, that if left unchecked house elves could overcome wizards and put them into bondage."

"What did he get into on you?" Viktor asked, amused. He hadn't heard this story yet, and he always wanted to learn things about her and her life. His children liked her, which was always good, and he knew that she got along with little Teddy rather well too.

"I haff heard that theory," Viktor conceded with a nod. "I haff also heard it posited that it is perhaps a symbiotic link and not being bound negatively impacts their magic and thus their lives after a certain age or such," he said. Their food arrived and he put the chips between them. He popped one into his mouth and spoke after he'd chewed and swallowed. "Of course, of the two theories, the one you say concerns me rather a bit, I admit. Though it seems perhaps a little extreme?"

Hermione shook her head slightly at the memory. "It was my fault really. I didn't realize he'd begun to climb and I left a parchment I was working on with my ink and quill on the table while I went to loo. When I returned he was standing in my chair making his own edits to my document. Since he had written all over what I'd written on I with the exact same ink I couldn't simply clear the parchment so I had to rewrite the entire thing." If anything, having Teddy around had definitely helped her learn to be wary and attentive of her own future children so as not to allow them to repeat Teddy's antics if that were possible.

"Yes, that is another theory," Hermione sighed. "It is the theory most people cling to because it is in the favor of Wizards. I believe the truth is found if you find the balancing point between the two. Yet we would have to create groups to test each theory to see which if any is closest to the truth." Hermione didn't see such research as being humane on either the master or the elf so it was something that would have to be left to speculation, at least as far as she was concerned.

"Oh my," Viktor said, chuckling and shaking his head. "Tsveta once got into Mikhail's entire ink supply. The entire supply. Including the charmed stuff that resists evanesco and such, for contracts and all. I vill let you imagine that outcome," he said dryly. The things kids managed to get into were numerous and unknowable.

"You are likely right," he told her. Such truths were usually somewhere in between the two extremes. "Hmm, true, true," he murmured, munching idly on a chip as he thought. His dark gaze honed back in on her after a long moment. "Vhat if you could come up with a... how do you say here... a diagnostic spell, like some healers use, to study the bond?" he said slowly, sounding the idea out loud to her.

Hermione cringed involuntarily at the recounting Viktor gave. "Yeah, I don't think Teddy's cuteness could have saved him if he'd gotten resistant ink all over the place. As it was Harry had to talk me down from the edge of an overly long lecture." Lectures were something Hermione had always been good at and being appointed prefect had helped her to perfect them.

"I have thought about that but there would have to be enough masters out there willing to free their elves or allow their bonded elves to be studied." She sighed and used her fork to move around some of the salad that had been placed before her a little while ago. "Based on some of the responses I received to my question I doubt there would be many willing test subjects."

"Misha isn't that inventive yet, so perhaps I am going to luck out," Viktor said in a voice filled with humor. He'd ended up hiring a cleaning service for Mikhail to fix his ink incident and it had taken quite a while for all the ink to wear off Tsveta.

Viktor wished he could cheer her somehow, or present her with an answer to her questions. "I vould allow Amiri to be studied, but I do not think she would be amenable to freedom for the effort, though you could ask her." He hmmmed softly, thinking. "You might do better to go outside of the UK," he said after a moment. "Vhere thinking is not so restricted about such things."

Hermione giggled lightly at the assertion that perhaps Viktor was going have it easy with Misha.

She was going to tell Viktor he didn't need to sacrifice his bond with Amiri for science. Something would come to pass eventually, she had faith. However, her thoughts were interrupted when he said for her to go outside. Glancing up she noticed a clock on the wall and she was reminded that she was supposed to meet Ron at the flat in twenty minutes. "Oh my," she jumped up. "The time has run away with us. I've got to go." She reached down and pulled her bag up and over her shoulder. She walked over and gave Viktor a friendly kiss on the top of his head before she hurried out the front where she immediately apparated home.

He loved to make her laugh. He smiled easily in response, simply enjoying it while it lasted.

"Oh, okay," he said, reluctance in his gut to end what little time they'd had. Viktor had the chance only to give her a brief one armed hug and turned to watch her leave. He sighed to himself and pushed his unfinished lunch toward the middle of the table. He'd enjoyed their conversation, but ending it especially quickly -- and especially because he knew she probably had to be somewhere specific -- was always a downer. He went ahead and paid and left, not feeling the need to stay alone.
